The A/C in my 1996 Disco seems to start out cold and then fluctuates as I drive. It goes from warm to cold and back usually in the span of 15-20 minutes. Doesn't always get warm, just not cold.
any sugggestions??

mine is acting weird too on my '96. when i put in on the third speed fan setting, it sometimes stops all together. i jiggle or tap the lever and it starts back again. so far i've only noticed it when i have it running almost at full speed.

any ideas?

No solutions but I have a problem too. My fan will shut off completely. It has done it on the #3 and #4 setting. Only shuts off for a couple seconds and then back on. I am going to wait until it gets worse before I dig into it cuz I don't want to waste time chasing ghosts. The only suggestion I would have for Warner would be to check the freon level. If it's low it'll do that.

We talked about the mysterious fan switch a few weeks ago. It seems that a lot of us have that problem. Mine started out like all of yours did, now it is tough to find a speed at all sometimes. I can put it in speed 2 or 3 and the fan will actually run at the same speed. I sprayed some WD-40 inside the switch, and that seemed to help a little bit. Rover does not sell the fan speed switch stand alone. You have to purchase the entire unit. Has anyone replaced their climate control unit. I got a price from the dealer of around $600 or $170 for the part and do the work myself. I was told that the climate control unit has to attach to an assortment of cables on the back side of the dash. Does anyone have any input?

Yeah, it's attached to cables that probably run as far back as the rear bumper :) (okay, a little humor ...apparently very little) Anyway, I found-out that the fan has a relay that will cut-out if it runs at high speed (pos. 4) for a long time, to prevent it from burning-up the blower motor. Sounds like a few of you are having genuine switch problems, though, so the cut-out may not be your case. As for the air coming out not being frigid on fan pos. 3, yeah, it can be caused by low refrigerant, but my experience is that it's a lot of air to cool and (especially if you're sitting at a stop light) the evaporator coil isn't but SO big, so it just can't cool and dehumidify the hot outside air down to the specified 40 degrees ALL the time. I don't know many cars that can.

...as for getting to the fan speed switch, pull the 3 knobs off the climate control unit, pull the fan speed knob off, and remove the screws that hold on the unit's fascia panel. Once that's off, 4 other screws hold the climate control unit in, and once they're out, pull the unit out and you can access the fan switch and everything else. But you don't have a lot of room to work with, as those cables mentioned don't have much slack. But the fan switch is right up front anyway. Hope it helps.

Still doing the interminnant thing.. any ideas? evaporator? condenser?

Are your electric fans in front of the condensor running?. If there not working the high pressure limit switch will trip, turing off the clutch on the compressor.

Check to see if the freon needs to be recharged or if it is overcharged. I had mine recharged and the compressor would cycle every 20 seconds. I took it back to the shop and they had overcharged it by 1/4 of a pound. They bled off the extra and now it works great. The only problem that I have left is the fan switch makes poor contact in positions 3 and 4. When I get a chance to fix it, I will share with everyone what I did.
