I love my disco, and like most of the rest of you, I am obsessed with it. And like the rest of you, i feel a sense of comradary with all other Disco owners, particularly for thier sense of taste. When I first got mine, I noticed how rare other Disco's were on the road. Naturally, I took to waving to every disco owner i passed when driving. Much to my surprise, out of about 150 waves, i gotten 2 return waves back! Pitiful! Everyone knows about the "jeep wave". We used to cruise in jeeps all the time (don't stone me! i converted!)and jeep owners ALWAYS wave to each other. Now why the heck can't i get other Disco owners to do the same? Maybe its just the tennessee attitudes...hmph~ anyone else notice this?

Here in MD we seem to do O.k. in the waving department. Just today I saw a Disco Series I and a Rangie. I waved to both, got return wavage both times. Might be they fear Kyle's wrath if they aren't civil, but that's just a guess.

You find that alot. All of us know what we have and love it. Rover snobs they buy them for the status symbol Your ratio sounds right. Keep waiving. Hell I passed a D-90 the other weekend and waived and the old man just looked on, and it was a tight road.
Or most people are like my wife 13yrs ago I was broke down (Car) and I was standing along the road to flag her down and she drove right past.
Luckly I was only 1/4 mile away from here house at that time.

Need I put in my 2 cents about most Disco owners in Southern California? You can drive for 5 minutes in the San Fernando Valley (the porn capital of the world, mind ya) and easily see 5 Discos, 2 Defenders and 3 RRs.

I rarely even try anymore. However, if you're sporting a Discoweb sticker, I'll definitely wave! It's my own little way of knowing who is least likely to have their head up their, well you know.

things are looking brighter here for me in central PA. just got the wave the ever present 'yinzer-nod' from a local fella in a '68+/- series IIA yesterday. i also get a wave usually once a week or so from a guy in a D2 and i know a lady down the street with a D2......that is about it here in state college. we only have about 8-10 rovers in this town anyhow.

oh......there is this beautiful girl/woman that drives a white D1 with yellow lab in it. if i could only get her to wave!! may be i will have to entice her with a discoweb sticker.

ps: a yinzer-nod is very common to rural parts of PA. it is known that while standing along the road you always nod your head slightly and mouth the words 'hoiy' as a local passes by.

I was thinking about the same thing at the weekend!

I have had my disco for about a month now, and in the UK there are quite a few about (most are mall crawlers), but I still wave or flash (my lights) at other disco drivers.

So far, nobody has returned the genture! Not one.

I'm still gonna keep it up though, I figure I'll either start a trend, or be classed as an individual (or nutter).

Got to say I got my first wave a week ago. A 60ish lady waved to me!!! I've waved at all sorts of 30somethings and they either have their heads up ass or are too stuck up to wave, but then I get the biggest smile and wave from a 60 year old lady??? People are wierd. I don't get many waves but I'll keep trying.

Well, I suspect there is a world of difference between the average Wrangler driver and the average Disco driver. "Every" Wrangler is an off-road vehicle, even if it never is. The majority of Discos, on the other hand, are 4WD station wagons, just like all the other SUVs out there. Whoa! That's not the reality of things, that is the perception of the owners. So, if a Disco owner is driving "just another SUV", why would they wave at another Disco any more than they would a Bravada or a Trooper or an Escalade? Not the same thing. Cover it up with stickers and some mud so we can recognize each other on the road. BTW, if you happen to see me and I don't wave, feel free to pull me over and take my keys away.

I'll usually wave at Jeeps and LRs that seem to be geared for off-roading (winch/racks/etc - lights on roof only don't count). I quit waving indiscriminently to all LRs since all I got was blow offs or weird looks! In light of the recent events, perhaps I'll cease my waving for a while!

I've tried waving to every Rover I have seen for the last 4 months and gotten a grand total of 4 Rovers to wave back.
Wow...
However, I don't care how bad we like to bust on Jeeps, they're owners are great. They all wave to me, and I wave at them. If I meet one in a parking lot or bookstore, often conversation starts about each others trucks and wheeling in general...wish I could say this about Rover owners.
I can't wait to finally meet some REAL Rover owners this weekend at the SAE.

Heeheehee...hate to tell y'all, but I met a White Series I Disco today, never seen it before, and I waved and he waved back. I saw him again about 10 minutes later as we reversed routes, and we both waved once more. I'm sure we both felt dorky "re-waving", but we both did it! Maybe it's the neighborhood....

Here in Phoenix most Rover drivers are too busy talking on their "cells" to notice ANYTHING. We also have a BMW Z-3, in 18 months I have had ONE person wave back. I would be willing to bet that 95% of the Disco owners have never even looked at this web site. These 95%ers are not enthusiastic about their rides at all. I am an avid motorcyclist and recently parted company with a Ducati 750SS and a Ducati 900 Monster. My wife did not understand my enthusiasm for these bikes until we went to a Superbike race at PIR in 1994. All of the japanese bikes were identical in sight and sound, the Ducati 888's were different and had a personality. The majority of duck owners I knew were avid enthusiasts, the clueless were a minority, partially because the bikes were so expensive to maintain and had a reputation for un-reliability.

James, was the Ducatti unreliable? I want to buy a 916 or 996 next spring. A friend of mine has one but he doesn't ride it enough to put any miles on it. I'd probably ride from June to Oct. daily. Would I have problems or is it just a matter of keeping up on the maint? Sorry to stray off topic.

I did not put enough miles on either bike to keep the gas in the tank from going bad. The biggest issue is finding a dealer that has a good mechanic. One dealership really messed up the jetting on my 96 monster. The water cooled 916/996 bikes have 4 valves per cyl versus 2 ea for the air cooled 750/900's. The desmo valve adjustments are $40 per valve and on the early 916's the back cylinder was extremely difficult to get at. Riding these bikes is an unforgettable experience, compares to a ferrari (so I am told) but the 916/996 are unforgiving as far as comfort. They are race bikes for the street and trying to commute on one is torture. Getting any of them on a twisty road makes up for it though. If you do get one make sure you get insurance thru Progressive, they have a glitch in their rates which makes a 916 about 1/3rd the cost of a Honda CBR600. Good luck.

Yes, I had the same experience with Progressive. I was looking at getting a Ninja 600 but, they wanted $1600 a year to insure it. Then I went and looked at a Buell Cyclone (1200) and they only want $650 a year.. I like the Buell so I may get it in about 8 months if I still have a job that is since I'm in the Telecom indust.

The waving thing was pretty good until the last two years here when it seemed like everyone bought a Disco. I can get Rangies and any other Land Rover owner/drivers waving and with a smile but very few do I get Disco owners waving. Maybe it's me. Not to mention that it looks like none of them have ever taken their Disco's off a paved road. What a waste of a beautiful rugged machine. Then again you don't see many Utah Disco Drivers on here.
