I have a '96 Disco. I recently tried to engage the cruise control on a long trip but the thing wouldn't work. When I press the switch to turn on the cruise control, the amber light comes on -- so I am guessing it is not a fuse. I press the SET button on the steering wheel but as soon as I take the foot of the gas pedal, the truck begins to slow down. Could it be some kind of loose wire between the switch and the steering wheel?

Check the vaccum line. There is a diaphram that pulls the throttle open, it has a vaccum line on it that likes to come off.

Also, make sure your brake lights are not on all the time. If they are you may need to adjust the brake light switch on the brake pedal. The cruise shuts off when brakes are pressed (or won't set if the brakes are on).

F.J. (Rovercon). I had the same problem on my 96 Disco. This is how I fixed my problem. Check the fuse, REMOVE it, that right REMOVE it and if it is not burned, out it back. For some reason that fixed my problem twice. Good Luck!

thanks for the replies guys. I'll give them all a try.

Jose which fuse is the one for the cruise control? I am reading the owner's manual and they don't specifically identify the cruise control. I am guessing it might be fuse 14 which is labeled as "Instruments, clock, speed transducer, SRS (secondary)."

I found something while pulling a VIN history report:

1994-98: Chafing of cruise-control wire against steering wheel coupler can cause insulation to fail; electrical grounding could then cause driver's airbag to deploy.

Yep, that was a recall. If you call a dealer, they should be able to tell you if your truck had it done...assuming you bought it used. If you bought it brand new, then you should already know.
