My passenger's side front fog light is burnt out. Reading the owner's manual it saids that the fog light is a sealed beam and that they "should only be replaced by an Authorized Land Rover Dealer." I give my dealer a call to find out about the cost of the light and they said it cost $130 each!!!

After I picked myself up from the floor, I remember that they charge $110 an hour for labor. How difficult is this light beam to replaced that it takes a dealer to do it? If I have them replace the light, it might end up costing me over $250 (with tax)!!

I could use that money better for the Heavy Duty springs I would like to buy instead.

I pulled mine apart and resealed them myself.
These are on a Disco 1.

There are two screws on the side of the fog lights and a main clip on the top that hold them in. You can pry off the lens and reseal it after you replace the bulb. I just bought a bulb from pep boys and changed it.

Why not get rid of them take the lower air dam off cut the bumper end caps and gain a better approach angle? Just a thought.

Jim, what sort of sealant did you use? I have a Pep Boys close to my house, I will go and check it out. Did they list the light bulb for the fog light or did you just buy a 12V light that resembled the old one?

Eventually I will remove the whole bumper and install the ARB bull bar -- that's why I don't want to spend a lot of money for a fog light when it will be on just for a year or so.

Thanks for the info.

I used the permatex RTV Silicone sealant. Also the bulb was the kc-hilite 2551 55w bulb I believe. it should have a lead already attached to the bulb. It should resemble the old one.

Jim,
Would the bulb be pretty much the same for any Disco 1? I'm looking to do something like what you described.
Thanks,
Daniel

Yeah I did this on my 97 Discovery SE. The two screws on the sides remove it from the mount and then you can pry out the light out of the black plastic casing you do not need to take the lens off. The lens should be sealed to the reflector and the reflector should be mounted in the black casing I used a putty knife to get it out and then resealed it so water would not get in between the reflector and the black plastic casing.

Jim,
I already know the one of the seals is shot. It (inside the light) is full of mud. Do you think this will give me any problems that changing the bulb won't fix? I'll clean and re-seal everything while I have it taken apart.
I hope this works. It's like a free $124.00.
($244.00 if you let them change it)

Thanks,
Daniel

It should be just fine, I had the same thing happen to mine. Mud filled. Just make sure you clean out the reflector and lens and then relseal it. You should be able to clean it for the most part, just make sure you don't use anything abrasive on it. Do this first and let it set a while for the sealant to cure a bit. then put in the new bulb reattach the clip on the back and reattach the wires and reseal it back in the casing. Make sure the wires are good not melted or corroded if they are you might want to redo some of the wiring. should be about a 30-40 min job.

Jim,
One last question.
Do I have to go to Pep Boys (none near me), or do you know of someone else who might carry a suitable light?
Thanks,
Daniel

any auto parts place checker, autozone, not sure if napa carries them I have been in some that do but some that don't. You should also be able to buy the light in wal-mart, kmart, fred meyer, meijers. etc.....
it doesn't have to be a kc hilite either it can be a rally, piaa or other brand.

it should look like this (this is the PIAA H-3 Bulb)
piaa bulb

but you can find a regular 55w one at your local store. that should match your other one that is not burnt out yet.

Jim,
I hate to beat this to death, but I found a bulb with no problem...well, maybe one. The guy at Murrays tells me that it's a 100w buld and they didn't have any 55w in stock, so I couldn't downgrade if I wanted to. Will this 100w bulb get a little too hot?
Thanks
Daniel

There FOG lights! 100 watt bulbs would be like using high beams! Find another parts store these are a very common bulb

I don't mind having a bright beam there, as I do a good bit of night time highway driving. I just don't want to melt anything.

They will propbably get to hot and melt the thin guage wires that are attached to the light.

As Robert says look for another store 55w are very common and the guy that told you 100w probably didn't know what he was talking about.

Try the departmet stores.
Jim

I even double checked with the guy before I bought them. Well, good thing I decided to keep the reciept until I checked here.
Thanks all
