I own a 94 Disco with reverse below 5th, it is giving me some trouble and I have heard this gearbox is not as strong as the earlier model where reverse was beside 1st. Is it a simple change to use the earlier gearbox, and is it true that my gearbox is not as strong? Are there aftermarket gearboxs that are stronger that will go straight in.

the later gear boxs should be stronger as the 5 speeds go.

Hey Wayne,

Depends upon who you talk to. Some do in fact say that the Earlier LT77s was a stouter box and that the newer R380 is simply a more civilized box (Better shifts through better syncros). It is my understanding that the R380 is the stronger box, but I'm sure there are others that will dispute this. My main reason for responding is to say that there is a newer R380 box with uprated bearings and supposedly stronger gear design, and it is used in the 2000+ model year trucks in Europe (don't know the prefix though, sorry). Both R380 boxes should be a pretty straightforward swap with your LT77s....
