...and I checked..all bulbs are burning fine. This all started when one night, my hazards came on by themselves and would not go off until I shut off the truck and restarted. Now the "trailer" light comes on! The only thing Lucas should make, is movies!

I think this is normal.
If you have a trailer attached, the symbol will continue to blink.
Think of it like the ABS warning light that comes on until you start to move.

The trailer symbol should always blink once when you use your turn signal (check your Manual). It will continue to blink if you have a trailer harness connected. Last night I had the same problem with the hazards on my Disco for the first time. I hit a bump very hard and was slightly airborn. When I came down the hazards wouldn't go off until I turned off the engine and restarted.

The hazards came on because the disco thought you had been in an accident. When an accident occurs, disco shuts off the the fuel pump, unlocks the doors and turns on the hazards.

I have had the same problem with the hazzards, but not from a bump. It only happens when someone in the passenger seat kicks the the panel in front of the door. Only once have the doors unlocked, but the hazzards have come on a few times. The fuel pump has never shut off.
The doors unlocking and the hazzards are a nice touch, but I am not a fan of the fuel pump shutting off. If I still need to manuever after an accident, I sure as hell don't want to have to restart my truck. This may be another feature to disable. Anyone?

If the fuel pump goes off when you hit a big pothole (or anything else that's safe to drive away from), how is it reset?
By Orville Wright on Monday, March 19, 2001 - 02:53 pm: Edit |
My fuel pump didn't shut off. Just the flashers and doors did unlocked come to think about it. I drove for 5 minutes thinking my blinker was on so I know the fuel pump was working.

Pop the hood. There is a black rubber button centered on the firewall that must be depressed to reset. I saw this happen once when someone went bombing up a hill.

It can be reset by turning the car off then on again.

They call this the "inertia switch". It will start you flashers, unlock your doors, as a safety measure.
As indicated above, simply open the hood and on most Discos, it is located by the windshield washer container just above the heater. Just push the black plunger and all is well. Also this switch provides power, through a relay, to the fuel pump and in severe deceleration, the pump will be shut down by stopping the power supply. You can define severe deceleration your own way but I believe this means collision.

A possibility for the hazords coming on is the alarm shock sensor. It is located under the dash on the passenger side and when a strong enough shock is detected it will kick on the hazards and a few other things.

My trailor light comes on as well when I signal. I guess it is just normal.

The trailer symbol will come on when the system detects a lower voltage in the turn signal system. This happens when you connect up a trailer,ie a drop in the current to compensate for the extra lights (see the large workshop manual for an explanation), but also if you have a bull bar fitted that has extra turn signals. Funny, mine only comes on though for the right hand turn, but not the left.

I was unaware of the bull bar issues with the turning signals. Mine is only on for the right hand turn as well, not the left. To be honest with you I have just given up on that little gremlin while i fix the other stuff!

THE REASON FOR YOUR TRAILER WARNING LIGHT COMING ON IS A FAULTY RELAY
