I have a 97 disco. Sometimes I can smell burned oil. I cant find any oil leaks e.g. valve cover etc. Is this normal?

Yeah it should be leaking. That is probably the problem.

I have oil leaking and no smell.

It might be just a small leak that is dripping on to your exhaust manifold or something.

leaking oil may be normal to some, but not a burning oil smell. some disco's leak around the oil pan and the plug. (not mine :)) the burning smell would likely indicate oil from the valve covers running down to the manifolds. pretty easy fix if this is the case. mine were done just before i bought it with 35K on it. just keep snooping around and you should be able to find it. are you sure it is coming from the engine area? oil dripping onto the exhaust is possible.

Did you just lube your driveshafts by any chance? When they start to spin the extra grease from the u-joints gets flung all over the place down there, including on the hot exhaust. Burning oil smell results, and sometimes even a little smoke from underneath the truck. Scared the shit out of me the first time it happened.
