Just got off work. I got the engine started and before I got a chance to put in gear, it dies. After that, I tried several times but it won't start. I went and check the engine shut off swith. I pressed the switch down and heard a click but it still won't start. Any help is appreciated.

It is a 96 Disco and it is the fuel shut off switch I pressed

Hold the throttle down a little and see what it sounds like. What year is it?

For the first crank, you can hear the engine is trying and after that, it just cranks.

ok , go to the rear and see if you can smell gas at the tail pipe. When they get flooded it sounds pretty much the same.. Also , there is a schrader valve under the hood on the fuel rail that you can depress and check for pressure. Can you hear the pump running at all?

No, I can't smell the gas at the tail pipe. I went to the back of the truck and I can't hear anything. Where is the schrader (is it next to the fuel shut off valve) and what does it looks like?

Its up on the fuel rail in the intake of the engine. Looks like a regular old bicycle tire valve , has a plastic cap on it. You should get some bleed off when you press the little stem in. There is a connection in the drivers side rear fender well for the fuel pump. The connections there sometimes get corroded , check it..

You check that connection in the drivers side rear fender well? Take it apart and check the connections there.. You have a voltmeter or tst light??

Is the connection bolt to the fender well? I can see a big black plastic connection with several wires come out of each side. Is that the one? I tried but it won't come apart. I am home now. I got a ride from a friend. I will go back and try it tomorrow. How do I check it with the test light?

this happened to my 95 last week. check the 15 amp fuel pump fuse under the hood. mine was blowing repeatedly due to a short in the wire between the fuel pump relay and the emission canister purge valve. never could find the short - just cut the wire and bypassed it. the tech at the dealer said he's seen wires get pnched under the dash before. good luck

What tool do I need in order to remove the rear fender well to get to the connection? If the connection is okay, what's next? Thanks.

Have you checked the fuel pump and fuel pump harness? This is a common problem for discos. If you remove the carpet in the cargo area you will see a black pannel there. Remove the panel and there will be the pump. Disconnect the wire harness that leads to the pump. If you see that the tip of the harness is burned you need to replace the harness and the pump as well. What you can also do while you have the panel off is have a friend try to start the car and you can listen to see if you hear the pump working. If you don't, you might have to replace the pump.

I have two fuel pump kits (pump module, harness, brass nuts and olives) and I can get one out in today's UPS. The parts are Genuine LandRover.

Just got my engine started. I went to the back of the truck and removed the black panel to expose the pump. I pound on it couple times (lightly) and then I heard a hissing sound for about 5 seconds. I turn the key and the engine just started. I guess it is a loss connection or a pump that is on its last leg. Thanks for all your help. It is greatly appreciated.

I was reading your fuel pump problem. I took my Disco to a Land Rover mechanic and they thought it was the fuel pump, so they replaced it. A year later I was experiencing the same problems. I finally realized that it was not the fuel pump. It was the connector under the rear driver side tire. Apparently the connector gets hot and expands. I've bypassed the connector and spliced the three wires using butt connectors. This last for eight months. My next step is to contact Land Rover and find out if there is a recall on the wiring harness to the fuel pump.

Thanks for the info. I have replaced my fuel pump and will keep my eyes on the connector. I am not sure where is the connector but I will look for it. Please let me know about your finding on the recall. Thanks again.
