i've read the tech page on how to mount a ladder on a disco. my question is can i just drill the holes and screw in the ladder, or do really have to do the whole rivnut thing. yes, i know i'm lazy...

Screwing it on isnt gonna hold much. Kinda defeats the purpose for putting it on in the first place..

if you screew it in i would be gingerly when pulling the door open with it. as for standing on it , i dont see it making a difference , since most of the support is held buy the top of the

Oh god, not another hunk of shit. There are enough of those already. Please, use the rivnuts. Install is easy and you don't even have to buy a RivNut tool.
Here's a shortcut to how I did a friend's Disco: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/disco2laddernew.htm

Buy a riv-nut tool from JC Whitney for $20.00. What's the big deal? I bought one when I installed the rear light guards and since then I have used it to install dog guards on both my RR and Disco. Paid for itself by doing the job right the first time.

You can also pull the rear trim panel off and throughbolt the bottom bolts with large washers on the backside. Kind of a PIA job, but pretty secure - moreso than Rivnuts IMHO

Is the rear door Aluminum or steel on the DII?

John: Oh God Not another Hunk of Shit.
What do you mean. Screwing and/or bolting. I understand all the problem you can have with having different metals touched each other. But if you take your time and try to do it right you should not have any trouble.
Try to do it right The top two holes on the rack are going into steel. Used stainless screws with some sealent. The bottom two holes used stainless bolt, nuts & washers. Drilled the holes larger than the bolts and on the back side where the nut & washer are I used a plastic washer next to the aluminum then the stainless washer. Now the question is am I going to have corrosion problems time will tell.
So please explain another hunk of shit lol

Yeah , through bolting is the best option. The rivnuts are better then just screws but the bolts and nuts are better then that. The problem with screws is that you only have the thickness of the sheetmeatl for them to grab , that aint much..
