Today I had a chance to use the diff lock on my '96 Disco and it sure made going up some loose dirt (clay like) a lot easier. As I was going up and down these hills (prior to engaging the diff lock), I was using Low and 1st gear to come down the steep hills to slow down the descent. But when the diff lock was engaged, as I was coming down similar hills, the engine wouldn't slow down the truck. As soon as I disenaged the lock, the engine started to slow down the truck.
Reading the owner's manual it states "With the differantial locked the drive shafts to front and rear axels are (in effect) joined together causing axels to rotate at the same speed." How does this "joining" effect how fast the truck goes down the steep hills with low range and first gear?

Sounds to me like you may have engaged the diff-lock in high range.

looking at the diagram gearbox:

LOCK ----- H
High and Lock are on the bottom

Oh!
What it has is:
Lo-lock | Lo-unlock
N | N
Hi-lock | Hi-unlock
Right side of console = unlock
Left side of console = locked
Rear of console = hi-range
Front of console = low-range
Left and back is lock in the high-range.
Left and forward would be locked in low-range.
There ya go!!

At least your diff lock works....cannot for the life of me even begin to get my selector to move into the left position....low range works fine, but no amount of wd40 or pb blaster has enabled me to get the selector loose....cannot even get my hand up there let alone a spanner to adjust the linkage....any other ideas guys???? 94 Disco

Peter,
Do you have a Rangie now, to go w/ the FSJ and the wife's Disco?
My FSJ was a full-time 4x4 case, but was a NP219, which had high, high-lock, neutral, and low.
I like the Disco's x-case because it gives locked or unlocked in both high and low...
