I recently purchased a 95 discovery. I'm thinking about adding around $1500 in upgrades, and getting an ARB bull bar and old man emu suspension. I was wondering what some other opinions would be in the first upgrades I should make.

for other options try: www.rovertym.com

what type/terrain of off roading do you plan to do? the best way to see what type of upgrades to do is to take your disco out and see what you feel the area of improvements should be.

Matt, I'm not sure if you know what you're starting here, LOL:). One upgrade leads to another, and another. The list varies, and can go on & on & on & on ... I agree, your upgrades should reflect your personal preferences on where you like to take it offroad, how often, etc.
Here were/are MY personal priorities:
1) Tires
2) Recovery points & gear
3) Vehicle protection (i.e. diff guards, sliders, etc.)
5) CDL (you don't need to worry about that - doesn't affect your vehicle)(I don't have it yet:()
6) New Bumper (also don't have yet:()
7) New Suspension (don't have yet:()
8) Lights - maybe Hella 4000's (don't have yet:()

I'm currently fiddling with: Roof rack that I can put on & take off easily, and a K40 CB antenna mount that we're experimenting with - (will attach to either grab bars and/or roof rack depending on what we're using.)

Some of the guys here can probably be of a lot more help, when you tell them what you had in mind, for the pricing, etc. Best wishes,:)
Kim

Whoops, I left out #4 - just add anything. ... At this point, I'm infected with "Rover Fever", and I want everything, LOL!

Matt,

"I'm thinking about adding around $1500 in upgrades, and getting an ARB bull bar and old man emu suspension. I was wondering what some other opinions would be in the first upgrades I should make."

I would recommend rock sliders before the ARB bumper. The bumper is sexy, but I think you will need the rock sliders before you will need the bumper. A good set of rock sliders is about $600 excluding the high freight charges for large items like rock sliders. I think rock sliders are a necessity if you intend to go offroading.

After you get the rock sliders, you might try simply removing the swaybars and driving the vehicle on the trails. This won't cost you anything and you'd be surprised what a stock Land Rover can do. You may find that you're happy with your Disco's performance as it is.

You will need front recovery points as you're bound to get stuck. You can add a pair of JATE rings for front recovery points. These are about $55 each at RoversNorth and considerably cheaper used.

Another requirement is a CB radio. You have to communicate with those in your group. Luckily, these are relatively cheap.

For the time being, you can get by on most trails by removing your front spoiler and trimming your front bumper's end caps. That's free.

If you're inclined, you can add a complete OME suspension kit for about $520 excluding shipping. If you do the install yourself, you can save a lot of money. The OME kit will give you a much better ride both on and off road, and give you slightly more clearance over obstacles. The slight lift provided by teh OME kit probably won't result in driveline vibrations and the costly items required to eliminate them.

I wouldn't swap out the tires unless your current tires are worn and need replacement. If so, then you can fit some offroading tires like the BFG 235/85 MT's. If you replace your street tires when they're worn, then getting the offroad tires is more like required maintenance/upkeep than burning up money on modifications.

Those would be my recommendations. Good luck with your new Disco.

Yeah , 3 DSU's doesnt go very far in the mod market. It does however go on and on and on in the tricks department. :) I think allot of small tricks here and there get you much mre in the beginning then a couple of big things..

What are some kinds of tricks that I could do?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Danno on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 - 02:41 pm: Edit

steal Kyle's Disco, put some stickers on it like let's say Christina Aguillera...hehehe

to get some extra clearance on the front, you can trim the bumper endcaps and remove the airdam.
and that's free.
get some new rear springs and move the stock rear springs to the front. then remove the sway bars.
maybe use synthetic fluids to keep everything happy.

definatly get recovery gear or at least attachment points on the disco.

For what it is worth, I trimmed the front bumper installed JATE rings, and diff gaurds.

I ran all the intermediate trails Solaros and had a great time.

Rock slider are what I needed.

and rumor has it nathan is going to be selling sliders soon. shhhhhhhh. you never heard that.

all good info as i am always learning from the gang here.

just beware........like Ho has told me, lights are addicting. they just start breeding and before you know it your truck looks to be sponsered by Hella.

i would say my list would be the same as the previous folks: tires, diff. guards, trimming endcaps and taking the airdam off, recovery points and just taking the time to do as much on your truck as you can. helps you out when you are out on the trail and need to know how something works or functions.

get out and wheel with your pals whenever you can........regardless of what they drive; j**ps, toyota's or even the occassional jacked up Pacer.

hell....just get out there in stock mode and have fun now. your truck works well right out of the wrapper!

if you are on the east come join us at the MAR.

Yep - get thee to a body armour supplier. Even faster if you don't plan on lifting your truck. One of the funnier things I see is guys all maxed out with lockers, big lift and big tires and no rock sliders - hhmmmmmmmm...

sliders and diff protection would be first on MY list
