Hi All

I have decided to spend some time/money on my suspension. I have just bought a new house and can get into the garage with my standard suspension and roof rack on. The suspension has done 90000Kms.

Although I use the vehicle offroad quite a lot, I have not really ever felt that I needed/wanted 2inch lift or bigger tyres etc .... and have been quite happy with the places I have been able to get and not worried about those I couldn't/wouldn't get to.

I am keen to get a better ride ... I think I want better bump recovery, and would like not to be quite so jolted over washouts etc.

I have been thinking that just upgrading the shocks .... perhaps to the 5 way adjustable Rancho's might be what I want, but leaving the springs standard. I have no problem with upgrading springs as well if someone can shed light on why this would be advantageous, and I dont mind storing the rack somewhere else between trips.

One installer I spoke to suggested 'progressive rate' springs for comfort and heavy duty ... any experience with these?

So I'm confused.... wisdom please. Specific spring/shock names & numbers would be really appreciated. I realise ultimately it is all personal preference/opinion but some of you have been doing this for a while so i'd value your comments.

regards
John

hi john,
i have DAP's BBMS (big blue monster) and monroe shocks. they work really well for me. but i am no expert. having said that and givin my vast experence in testing gravity on a two wheel vehicle (both on the closed asphalt and dirt courses)i have learned the following. you must consider what you are going to be using your disco for. that is to say that if you are using it for rock climbing, like ho and those left coast bouz the set up is differnt than what it is for us mid west fellas where mud is black and slippery, which is entirely differnt than those who ride dunes or just the concrete slab to and fro work. consider what your goals are and build from there. if i am wrong spank me and tell john otherwise!

Mike
Although I was verbose I wasnt very clear. Of my offroading, 30%sand, 50%rocky forest trails and pine forest stuff, 10%mud, and that leaves 10%for whatever comes.... I dont do rock climbing. I camp a lot and carry a load of gear. My vehicle is also a daily driver.

I'd think that a set of OME medium duty springs with Bilstein shocks would be a geat setup for you. Although, this would may give you too much lift to fit in your garage.

I've got a Adventure Roof Rack, the Rancho RS9000, and the RoverTym 2" springs. I have to deflate my tires a bit to fit in the garage. And for what I do, this setup is great. However, I am not overly impressed with the Rancho RS9000 shocks. They are good and inexpensive, but not great.

However, if I wanted an on-road dream boat ride in a Disco 1 (don't know much about a D2 suspension yet), I'd go with the OMEs (either medium or heavy duties) and Bilsteins shocks. Also, this setup will do pretty good off-road too!

Of course, the usual disclaimers apply. Your mileage may vary, etc., etc., etc.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Also, if you are happy with your setup, don't change it just because someone else says so. Sort of a 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' kind of a thing.

There is nothing wrong with a stock Disco.

Thanks,
Mike B.
