My friend wants to buy a 1994 LWB Range Rover 4.2 about 80,000 miles on it. Air suspension, loaded otherwise.

I looked at it, and it seems to be in great shape. They want $12,000 I think.

Is there anything else I should tell him or that he should be warry of? How good is the 4.2 engine?

BTW, he commutes to college about 30 minutes each way.

I noticed that the 4x4 shifter doesn't have the diff lock slot or option like my '97 Disco? What does that mean

LWB, cool

Plan on removing air suspension & replacing with standard coil suspension (throw some OME springs & shocks in that baby).

Price sounds OK, but not great, with year & mileage. For comparison, I've looked at 1995 LWBs at the dealer with 65-75k miles for $14k & change.

Ask one of our dealer friends on this board to run the vin #.

I believe 1995 is last Classic LWB, so he could find one model year newer...

Its a viscious coupling set up which is different than your discos positive lock.
Works ok unless you go to 33's or better in tire size and wheel aggressively. The 4.2 enjine has slightly more torque. Its a good motor.

I got a 93' and I use it as a daily driver and for some wheelin. As for the EAS, get rid off it. The LWB is really comfortable, plenty of room, couldn't ask for more. I bought my 93' with about 98,000 miles on it for 9 grand. I must advise you, maintance is not cheap, I've already put around 7000-8000 in upgrades( Transmission was the big hit) this number also includes the off raod mods I have added. I say you should try to talk em down, your friend will need the extra cash.

i just bought a 95 with 72K for $8800..at auction. i also have a 93 with 95k for $9000, so that money doesnt seem crazy...but it is a bit high. Blue...arent "Dealer" and "Friend" an oxymoron...:)

My sweety bought a '95 LWB with about 70K on it this spring for $12K. Personally, I think the air suspension is cool (until it stops working). Get in, turn the key on and the thing start leveling itself. I feel really 'urban' when I'm in it. Just wish I could make that front end bounce. And if your friend is looking for comfort, nothing beats a LWB with the EAS. I've got a '95 Disco with OME's and the difference in comfort is night and day. But the LWB is kind of a pussy vehicle if it's not heavily modified. More for on-road activities and long drives because of that long wheel base.

I bought my 95 lwb in Jan w/78K- now 94K. I do all my own maintenance. IF your friend is willing/able/has the time to properly maintain it, then great. If it has a full record of maint schedule all signed off, great too. IF NOT then you can expect deferred maint. that will not reward inattention. The catch-up game is a tough one even for the diligent among us. The reason the discounts are large on these COMPLICATED vehicles is that RISKS are high. High risk invariably goes with high reward, however.
A whole 'nother thread of thought is: WHY is this person wanting to buy a RR to begin with ?
Skier/mountain biker/hiker/camper/trailer pulling/off-road festivities/urban assault vehicle
or as a mall crawler/image prop ? DO NOT buy it if the price is right and the vehicle is wrong for that person.... LOVE my 95lwb BTW !!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure that the LWB helps it qutie a bit off road. May be a little longer, but a lot more stable.
