I have a leak from the rear/upper seal on the steering box of my 95Disco. Oil drips from right under the input of the steering column. I'm wondering if the seal can be replace without taking the box out. There seems to be enough room to work on it, but I wish someone could say they have done it before.

add a little brake fluid, it swells the seals and fixes for long time. but if you want to replace the seals check out the roversnorth board - www.roversnorth.com for a how to. Most people figure the time and pain in the a$$ factor make it easier to replace the box with a superior box. I added 2 tbs of brake fluid to mine 20K ago to a nasty leak and it has only leaked a few drops since. ALWAYS leave the wheels turned straight when getting out, turning off -otherwise the pressure speeds up leaks.

My 95 Disco steering leaks like crazy too, I'll have to try that brake fluid tip.

Thx for the tip Jack. Hope it works for me too.

Jack,
what did you mean by a superior steering box?

You can get steering boxes from Meridian(?) in San Diego for under $300. They replace one of the seals on the output shaft of the OEM box with a roller bearing to prevent future leaks. Or something like that...

I bought one and have been very happy with it...they do a real first rate rebuild. They even shipped it for free.

Search this board for Meridian and you can find more info.

This needs to be added to the vendors list here:
