Can someone suggest a solution for providing a safe and strong recovery point for a stock disco? I am not in a position to get a ARB or similar bumper time or money wise before rally this coming weekend but I want to be able to get my stuck ass pulled out safely if I need it. Rear is a no brainer, but I havent seen any solutions for the front.

thanks

I should mention i guess that i have the factory brush guards. I would assume that any recovery using these would rip them right off...

well i am in the same situation as you. well i know what people say about the front brushgard and how it should not be used as a recovery point. well as long as you really crank down the bolts to the frame you should not have any rotation of the guard. they do have a tendancy to rotate up and smash the hood if they are not kept tight. i know of others that use this as a point of recovery and have not issues. i am going to do what BlueGill does and hang some 3/4" shackles from the brushgard loops. i think what i will also do is have some jate rings bolted or welded to the frame close to where the brushgard bolts to the frame. also the use of the tie downs have been used by others in conjunction with other front recovery points. our options are limited with what we have.
see ya there.

it also helps if you spread the recovery load between both loops on that brushguard (pull on both brushbar mounting points instead of just one).

Are we talking D1 or D2? For a D1, check out Terrain Master(www.terrainmaster.com). They have a jack point that can be used on the front. They will ship directly to the US. I've not used one personally.

Thanks,

i've spent a lot of time lying under the front bumper........(its a beer thing)

it doesn't look to difficult to fabricate a receiver assembly that will bolt between the frame rails.

based on early design, i think thar the receiver itself would be positioned just behind the front licence plate.

i think that ramsey sells/used to sell such a thing...

has anyone installed a class III receiver - or fabricated one?

The Warn multimount is just that - a 2" receiver welded to square tubing that mounts between the front frame rails - bolts right up to the existing bumper mount holes.

Haven't put one on, but did take one off someones truck recently :)

Ron;

do you like it?

Not really. Its ok and look pretty stout (I am 100% convinced that the winch mount or frame would break before the reciever would), but it sits way too low to keep the winch mounted and offroad. My initial plan was to invert the reciever and mount it with the hole through the bumper but it would not work. However you could easily make one up and do that if you wanted.

Ron;

looks like a receiver mounted directly between the frame rails would put the receiver straight through the factory bumper. My thoughts are that i coudl cut through the factory bumper and let the receiver fit through. For normal street use, the licence plate would cover it, for off-road, I'd take off the plate.....

The goal here is that my '98 Disco would still look stock yet have the benefit of a really robust front recovery point and the ability to winch from either front or rear.

As background...its a daily driver and I'm not likely to do a 5000 mile safari. I am really looking for some piece of mind when I do hit the dirt (or snowy foresty road short-cuts :))

Beyond the obvious approach angle considerations is there any benefit to mounting the winch higher vs. lower on the front end.

sorry the post is long and rambling - not enough coffee yet...

You would have to put it up about 3/4 of an inch above center.

Make sure you consider how you are going to get the pin in and out.

Higher/lower, nah

Cheers

how about a switch in the cockpit that automatically folds the license plate down to reveal the front recovery point?

bro, Smokinbro.

Ron;

I think that a vertical hole through the black plastic trim just behind the brush bar would do it. Maybe just a bungie cord to give it a little pressure to keep it down.

Blue;

I like it - after that I think I'll go for super air shocks bounce the front end up 48" - that way I wouldn't need the highlift. just bounce the front end up onto the rock shelf. A few dingo balls - a little latin music..... I'd be one style'in west coast boy.

hahahahah

"looks like a receiver mounted directly between the frame rails would put the receiver straight through the factory bumper"

Actually, it goes through the openings above the air dam. I've got one and I've been trying to get rid of it for several years.

Rovers North Class III front receiver hitch...
Mounts to the stock bumper mounts, nothing needs to be changed. I've hung a fully loaded D90 off of it - it's solid.

They were close to $300 at RN - make me an offer.
If it's a good offer I'll even paint it so it's nice and shiny.
