Cast Iron is a real PITA to weld. You will need to replace it.

Knocking could be due to a few things. Yes the manifold can be welded by first drilling a hole at each end of the crack. Then a gouge must be ground down the length of the crack. The gouge can then be filled with weld but has to be done slowly. If its done that way it will be good as new. If not it will just crack again..

You can do it with any of them in that fasion as long as you take your time and do it slowly. Some put the stuff in an oven and warm it up but I never have. I hav done them with both a stick box and the mig. the key is to kill the crack by drilling it at the ends.

I just brought mine to LR and had them fix it. Love extended warranties :) Mine was special. I had two exhaust manifolds, well after the crack grew all the way around.

Kyle is correct on drilling holes...you can get cast iron welding rod...or clean good and braze with brass rod. Actually brazing wont give you the crystaling like stick welding...wont ever crack or break at the weld...just clean the metal good by grinding the surfaces to weld to.

I never said it was imposable just a Pain In The Ass. So you spend $50 getting somebody to weld it for you or you get a new one for????

I just had this exact problem with my disco. The right side manifold had a small hairline crack, and when I cranked it up, it sounded like a big loud redneck muffler. After driving it for a few minutes it went away b/c the manifold heated up and the crack sealed itself. Had it replaced at my local shop for $300.

There is also a process called spray welding. The manifold is cleaned as described before and a special torch with a powder canister is used to spray molten metal over the crack. This is probably a fancy type of brazing.

go to a junkyard and get one...unless it has a crack, they don't wear out....
