my 96 disco (80k miles) has developed a squeek when i turn left. it occurs in unison with the rotation speed of the wheels. it sounds like it is coming from the front wheel(s?). it doesn't occur when i apply the brakes. it also changes from a squeek to almost a grinding sound. any ideas?

Yesterday I looked at my brakes, I've been having the same problems as you, except for the fact that mine sqeeks to the right. Although I looked at the brakes, and they still had some brake material left, I removed them, and identified why they sqeeked. New pads have some angulation cut into the pads in the front and rear, this angle keeps the pads from chattering or squeeking, well, mine were worn down past that point, so that the leading edge was 90 degrees to the pad surface, causing the sqeek. I know this, because mountain bike brake pads are the same, or have thet same fault. I simply put in new pads, and they stopped.

I have heard of people putting cut-up coke cans as shims back there, but didn't understand why....
Maybe this is a solution to setting them up so they are not 90 degrees anymore? You shim them so they don't hit at 90 degrees?
