I haven't looked at it yet but I can't wait to read it cover to cover this weekend. I'm still 1-2 years away from purchasing a DiscoI or II (not sure yet). So, I'm going to use that time to learn everything I can about both LRs. Thanks for all your help so far. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions in the near future.

My husband advised me to avoid buying LR mags until we were on the cusp of buying. I whined, but he knew me, and I KNEW he knew me, LOL! It would have made me miserable until we bought the Rover, but maybe you have a tougher psyche than me! Have fun!

i bought my first issue of LRW in october 1999 - and bought a Disco in November 1999

not that the second event was a consequence of the first, my mind was set on a disco already, but it made things easier :)

I think all the above mentioned magazines suck ass. About 50 percent of the thing is advertising.
Look at the "Reader's Rides" portion, it's hillarious. Pathetic to say the least.

Today I had nothing better to do, so I went to the gallery section here in this site, and actually counted the number of galleries there. it has something like 150 different galleries.

AND IT'S FREE!!!!

Axel, Ho and Kyle, Thanks big time for this great site.

I bought LRM, then discovered DiscoWeb 2 days later.
The magazine never got read, and after speaking to you guys about LR and Disco stuff (thanks to Steve for warning me off about the right-off), I was hooked. Bought my 98 Disco a month later.

WhooHOO!

come to think of it, there's one bi-monthly thin rag in the U.S. called Jp Magazine... and there's four full-blown, 1/4" thick glossy LR Magazines in UK.

I have to give them credit for photography. And for the fact that these are much more towards travel and wheeling than nuts and bolts (as most U.S. 4x4 mags are).

Discoweb - sure it beats the shit out of all mags taken together, and it's spam-free. But, after having to stare at the goddamn screen for 8-12 hours a day, the last thing i want to do is to fire up a PC when i come home. And here LRW/M/OI/E comes handy.

Ho, ever thought of making a printed version of Discoweb collection?

If you have a color printer then you have a printed version :)

most mags publish stuff that is sponsored by some manufacturer so you have to take it w/ a grain of salt. on the other hand, discoweb info is straight forward from real people and that's real info. pic gallery... great asset. to see so many people's vehicles and most galleries show each individual's disco new from mod to mod. it's nice to see that variety... haven't seen that in a mag... :)

Chuck why are you waiting 1-2 years to buy a rover? if the reason is money You should look around. Used rovers speciealy DI's can be had for a great bargin. Far less then you would expect somtimes. just a thought I can,t speake for other people.

Remember all that talk about starting a mag here in good old US of A? A bunch of us have been working (offline) on this for months. You never know what may be available on this side of the pond next year...

Who's interested?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ho Chung (Ho) on Friday, October 05, 2001 - 07:51 am: Edit

, thanks for the kind words.

i think discoweb wouldn't be what it is today if it wasnt' for all the submissions of pics and cool articles that the visitors send. so actually, the credit should go out to all of you disco owners that make this happen.
and thats' another reason that we feel this is better than magazines, everyone contributes, instead of a few selected "editors" doing all the brainwashing...

also, for being free from commercial ties, we have no fear of revealing the truth here. take a look at kyle's window. would you ever see a "window" in one of these land rover magazines? . They all rely on advertising money from these same vendors.

peter, a printed version of discoweb that you can take to the shitter... would be SWEET!!!
but we just haven't found anyone that is willing to crank out the printing for free. :(

Wow!! I didn't realize I'd get this response. Don't worry I found Discoweb WAY before I ever picked up a LR mag. Discoweb is definitely straight to the point, no messin around info on the Disco. I'm not trying to take anything away from DW. This site kicks a$$. I have this problem where I have to read every car mag i can get my hands on when I have time. (sids note) I have to admit I have a subscription to JP magazine because I thought I was going to get a j$#p for a while. But I don't even read it anymore it goes straight in the trash. But I have since found the light!!! I just love getting as much info as I can from as many different sources as I can. I agree with peter, sometimes you just can't look at the screen any longer. The reason why I have to wait for 1-2 years is because I'm a senior in college right now and the money flow is a little low. However in that time frame, with the job I already have lined up, I will be in a financially secure position with almost no educational debt.

I have to say that I enjoy the ads in LROI, LRM, LRE etc. I like to see the range of accessories available and drool over the LROI For Sale section in the back - Series IIA for L1500, SOLD!!!

I bought my first LROI in March of '96, and got my Discovery in August 2000 - a 30th birthday present to myself.

Those were a very long, rough four years but I did know a lot about the marquee by the time I was ready to jump in. I'd recommend doing the reading as well as spending every spare minute here (I wish I had Discoweb when I was making my decision!)

Cheers,

Erik

If you like ads, try picking up any of the million "chick mags" out there. My wife gets all sorts of these mags. They each weigh about 40 lbs, and there's about 6 pages of actual content! These damn things come with perfume samples, wedding invitation samples, lotion samples, etc. I'm working on a truly objective North American Land Rover mag to satisfy the need for portability and that addiction to the glossies that I share with Chuck...with grease samples and "scents of the undercarriage" samples

They should put lotion samples in Playboy.

that reminds me of a scene from "Me, myself, and Irene".... hehehe

Ho, what i had in mind was if there's someone besides me who'd like to flip thru paper version of discoweb on a shitter, we could pitch in and have a bunch made.

Bluegill - need any help with NALR mag?
i'd love to see that happen!

Chuck - no, my Jp doesn't go to trash, but it lost quite a few points since Rick Pewe left. I don't think i will continue my subscription.

I re-read the reader's rigs section over and over in my back-issues. Those sections always leave me wanting for more. That and expedition stories. All the GB mags seem to be technically up to it, although there is little if any time spent on NAS spec motors (e.g. V8i and the new petrol range).

Another area sorely lacking is the suspension mods part of ownership. The best companies seem to be Stateside, so who better to report on the different options available and installation?

The LR mags from UK seem mostly geared for Series type vehicles. Last night I went to Barnes and Nobles to kill some time. I picked up JP, Four Wheel drive and SUV, LRO, and one other mag I can't remember the name of. By far the JP and SUV mags have more useful info than LRO. For example, did you guys see all the air compressor that's out there for on board air solutions? Anywhere from 1/5hp to 2hp (belt driven or electric).

Not to mention the cover price for LRO is very high compared to other US mags.

My favorite parts are the how-to's.... the things that I haven't done yet, but I can read through it and see the pics and visualize what I'm gonna get into once the time comes for me to do it. That's the reason why I don't toss out any of the LR mags. The ads, etc., aren't worth too much to me, but the how-to's are very helpful. Now, I have to say that DiscoWeb is where I get almost all of my useful data for the Disco, and Guns-n-Rovers for the Series (tho' I have to say I like the Series page here at D-web, too!). The biggest negative about the LR mags IMO is the cost... I'd drop $3 or $4 on a good magazine, but at $8 for a periodical on cheap paper.... uh, there REALLY has to be a needed article for my archives for me to spend it... or a pic of a friend's truck or some such!!

My suggestions for the US version is a) lots of repair tips, how-to's for neat ideas, etc.; and b) keep the price-per-issue reasonable and you'll have a life-long subscriber.

IMHO.... :)

Anon,

go to any junk yard, and dig yourself a York A/C compressor. Then, follow these directions (no, not my website) -

http://www.petesplace.net/petejeep/onboard_air.htm

and you get so much air you wouldn't know what to do with. It pumps almost as fast as my CO2 tank.

peter
