What are some simple, efficient ways to water proof under the hood? Electrics and what not.

Di-electric grease on all electrical connections - protect the distributor and coil (assuming pre 1996) - not the end all/be all - but it's a start.

How would i go about protecting the distributor and coil. I have had problems with water getting into my distributor and causing misfire and sometimes wont crank at all after wading a creek or really heavy rain. Put a new cap and rotory button on and all is well but i havent been off road since i installed them. Any idea on keeping water out of distibutor itself?

LR makes a genuine part to cover the coil - or you can relocate the coil away from the grill

As far as the dist. goes - you can seal it with RTV silicone where the cap and dist. mate. Also - put di-electric grease in all the boots and on the towers on the cap to make a good seal.

What of this genuine part to cover the coil? do you have a part number for that? oooh..I want one after stalling twice at MAR this weekend...

Sorry - don't know the p/n - if you e-mail Rover Connection with a description -they'll get you a price and p/n

All it is is a rubber boot that fits over the coil and protects the +/- contacts from shorting.

Also - carry a can of WD40 with you -a quick spray and your started again...

Personally, if I had a coil - i'd move it instead

On a D1 where would you move it to? there don't seem to be a whole lot of places that offer much more protection...

Anywhere other than behind the grill where it gets first contact with water - back to the firewall or on a fender maybe - only problem is you don't want an excessively long coil wire.

part number is
STC9124 (around $20)

hope this helps

Another tip I have used is to run a hose from the heater into the distributer, this way you get dry air presurising the distributer. You do need to tap a plug into the side of the distributer though.

A thing to see is go to a junkyard or store and get the hat for the dist. they came on newer fox body mustangs and some lincoln mark 7s. ford knows that you never forget your hat.
