V8 runs like a pig when cold - any thoughts ?

I have a 1995, V8 3.9 (300) which runs like a pig on cold mornings for at least 1 mile. When I say like a pig I mean you have to floor it, it thinks about it for a bit then jerks on.

This happens on petrol and I have found when switching to LPG it dies totally.

If I leave the car running for about 3-5 minutes it runs fine on petrol and LPG.

Is this a common feature of the V8 ?

Is this after warmup or not? Any engine should be allowed a few minutes time warm up on cold days, otherwise bad, bad things are happening inside with that non-viscous oil!

cant help youre question i'am afraid,but you could help mine,I've got the same setup 300 3.9v8,and i want to convert to lpg, what sort of mpg do you get on gas[lpg]?

At present I am getting about 10/11, but I have heard of people getting between 12 and 15.

Damian..My 95 Disco does the same thing, and I've got new plugs, wires, distrib. cap. I think it's just the nature of the beast. Once it hits about 45 degrees F, it takes off just fine. Bill is right, though about the warmup.

Check the IAC or "stepper motor" , if it's bad just clean or replace. It's fairly inexpensive.

Stepper Motor is the same thing as an IAC or Idle Air Controller. Controls the air at idle, it lets the engine breathe better. http://www.rangerovers.net/rrpartsv.htm#electrical

follow the link, there are part numbers and another brief description. On my 95 the unit is located on the back of the intake.

Not really sure, it's an electronic device. Might be with the fuel injectors or emissions control. If you can't find it, just email me directly. I was thinking of posting a fix on the discoweb soon.

So from what al is saying the car should not be like this when cold.
