Have any of you noticed that the Discos come with a muffler and a resonator? Can the resonator be removed for better flow of exhaust and more power? How loud does it become upon removal?
Is anyone running aftermarket exhaust?
How good are the cheap "Flowmaster" type mufflers that retail for about $30?
I'm to concerned about spending $200 on an exhaust that might get torn off on a rock.

The resonator can be removed. It will not really give you much in the way of power. I doubt you will really notice the increase in volume, if so, only a bit. Any Flowmaster muffler is more free flowing than stock.

Emilio I removed my resonator after a small altercation while off road no problems so far and as for the sound very little increase

Emilio, I had a local muffler shop custom bend a rear section of pipe for me. I put on a performance muffler, which increased my fuel economy a bit and the custom tailpipe piece. They were able to tuck everything up a little bit higher than stock and cut the tip so that it does not hang nearly as low by the bumper.

Same here. Mine was removed by an off-roading mishap. It snapped off perfectly so that I was able to connect a straight pipe and then an end-piece diverter to direct airflow away from the bumper and cabin. I considered it a 'happy accident', as I now have a better departure angle, it looks better, and there are no major noticable differences between pre and post resonator removal. And this happened 70K miles ago.

See Greg Davis' D2 in the photo gallery section. He removed his resonator and has fabricated a really nice exhaust which is higher in the rear fender.

When I last spoke with him he was planning to go, most likely that was his. You may have noticed his rear bumper, which is also a really nice piece.

replaced from cats back with flowmaster and custom bent pipe all for uner $200.

I changed out my system with a flowmaster and replaced pipe all the way back and removed resonator. It was too loud for me with the flowmaster, it had a annoying resonation between 1500-2000 RPM (all the time in town), so I had a new stock muffler installed (not stock LR, just their standard muffler) and it got rid of the annoying resonation. Now I like the tone, it's pretty quiet, but you can tell you have a V8 under the hood and I can have a conversation inside without yelling. I had them route the tail pipe high so almost no risk of smashing it. I spent $200 ($50 of which was to replace the muffler a second time)
