This is a bit of a mechanical newbie question but I was wondering exactly how would I know if a fuse was blown or not. My 96 disco has lost the lights on the gear shift as well as the ability to use the cruise control and the clock. I have just started to look through the fuse panels (in the steering column and under the hood and it occured to me that I had no idea what I was looking for. So paint me stupid. I was just hoping for some rudimentary advice! Thanks

If you pull a fuse out and look at it, you can tell, usually. A fuse is supposed to provide continuety between it's two connectors. If the amperage exceeds the fuses rating, it burns out and the connection is broken. The easiest way to check continuety is with a multimeter, then you don't even have to pull them out. You can get a meter at Radio Shack.

Also if you go to Walmart they sell a "fuse testor " with a bunch of fuses for like $8.

Just line up the contacts. If the lights goes on it is good if not replace with the same type of fuse.
