I am trying to change my tires on 1997 Disco. What is the most practical and best valued tire brands I can purchase? I run stock tire size.

I also run stock tires on my '97. As for most practical and best valued brands...kinda depends who you talk to. I run stock tire size (235/70-16) Pirelli
Scorpion S/Ts and I'm very happy with the brand,price, and performance on the road. The times I've been offroad didn't
have any problems either.

They don't make too much tires in 235/70-16. The new BFGoodrich Mud-terrain KM tires come in that size. $158 each though. People with stock cars like to use 225/75-16. It is slightly taller, and slightly narrower. your gas mileage should increase too. A lot of tires are available in this size, and the prices tend to be cheaper than 235/70-16. As far as a good brand, BFGoodrich All-terrain,Trac-Edge, Mud-Terrain; Goodyear Wrangler MT/R or Dunlop Radial Rover RT seem to be liked.

I bought some Toyo Transpath Tires in the same size and rating as the XPCs. Great quiet ride and very resonable. A better tire than the Dunlops. Check them out.

Where did you get the tire and what was the price you paid?
I'm considering Michelin Crossterrain but if Toyo provide good tire with much better price, I'm definitely interested in it.
Anybody else has experience with Toyo? Any pros and cons of them?

I put a set of Yokohama Geolandar AT Plus II on my rig in the stock size. They are quiet on the road, great traction off of the road and in the rain. So far, mileage looks to be good. I am a huge Michelin fan, so I struggled with the decision. I spoke with a trusted friend of mine in the tire business. He told me that if I bought the Yoko's and was unhappy with them in the first three months he would take them off and only charge me the difference to go to Michelins. Needless to say, I am still on the Geolandar's and love them. Plus, I can put another set on in 50,000 miles or so and STILL have money in my pocket.

Another great tire is the Futura's sold at Pep Boys. They are really Cooper tires, but are rebranded as Futura for Pep Boys. They are great tires, and one of the best values around. I am running a set of 235/85/16 Futura Enforcer MT's on my Disco right now. I used to run BFG's, but do not regret the switch to Futura.

My uncle has been in the tire business for 30 years and caters to sportscar enthusiasts like Porsche & BMW Clubs in Florida. He knows tires.

He compared the XPC and the competition including ratings etc. Toyos are almost identical with very similar ratings. I got two for a bit more than one Michelin. Going back in a few weeks for the other two. With a new baby I could saved about 80 per tire. I used them off road today while hunting and they were great. May hold a few more pebbles but who cares.

Is anyone running the new BFG MT-KM yet? I just saw an article on them and I need to replace the tires on both trucks. I am gonna put a set on the 90 but was thinking of maybe checking them out on the Disco as well. If not, then Futuras baby. Even though our Pep-Boys raised the price to $96 per tire.

Adrian, Pep-boys in our area is running a special on all the futura tires (except the Enforcer MTs)so it might be worth it to check your local shop out if you are still looking for the more standard sizing.

my futuras cannot keep in balance for two weeks. I have a lifetime balance deal with Sears auto center, but it looks like they want to opt out of this deal Off-road, one air-down, and off the balance they are again. They dig like crazy, though.
Never had this problem with 33x12.5 BFG M/Ts.
But if the question is which highway tire to use, my vote goes for stock Michelin XPC. Or, if the price looks prohibitive, Michelin XW4/HR4/whatever else they have, even LTX is okay.

Trevor at TMS turned me on to the Yokohama Geolandar A/T 245/70 and I think they are great. I used a set at RoverFest and found the traction to be great while not being noisy on the highway. Driving around town and on the highway was not a problem either - even at 80mph. Wet road traction was great too. And the price is considerably less than the factory Michelins.

I'm starting to get some mileage on my Dunlop Radial Rover R/Ts now, and I'm liking them more and more. I can't find anything about the original XPCs that was on it that is better than the Dunlops. The on-road drivability is about the same, with the Dunlops being just a bit quieter and smoother than the XPCs. Off-road, though, the Dunlop R/Ts are much better.

The Dunlop 'looks' like a Rover tire, too... the XPC looked too much like a street tire for my tastes. I have to admit, the XPCs did better off road than I expected them to, but they weren't an 'off-road' tire.

The R/T isn't available in 235/70... mine are 245/75, but they do have 225/75, 265/75, 215/85, and 235/85 sizes available for 16" wheels; and a 7.5x16, too.... (And if you are so inclined, they have a 235/75R15.)

Best price I found was at TireRack.

Regarding the Dunlop R/Ts 245/75.......I just purchased some from a local tire shop for $120/tire. Hopefully they will be here today. Tire rack is priced better but the shipping was another $80, they had to ship them from a warehouse in Louisiana. So try Tirerack first but double check shipping costs.
