We have a 97 Disco with 50,000 miles that we bought new. Overall, it has been very reliable and we are happy with it. However, after 5 years, we were thinking of getting something different, and are considering a 99 RR 4.0. I was hoping to get some input from people who have owned both.

We like the Disco, but it is not terribly comfortable for long trips and we could use the extra space. My main concern is that the RR, with all the electronic dodads, would not be as reliable as the Disco, and that we might take the chance of buying someone else's lemon.

Lately, i've been hearing a lot of people say avoid '96-'00 RRs. If you have owned the disco since new, why sell it? You already know what it's been thru. Do you know the RR's history?

I have heard the same that the new Range Rovers have issues. I know when I sit at the dealer for reg service I see most people with Discos getting general service done where as the Range Rovers that come in are mostly for issues that need fixing.

i have both a 97 Disco with 62,000 miles and a 96 4.0 SE with 37,000 miles. I have never had any "major" problems with either of them. of course there are the typical "roverisms" to contend with, but nothing other than that. In general Rangies 95-00 will have more issues as they have alot more going on in terms of electronics and computers which have never been Rovers strong suit. the 99 4.0 is much better compared to 95-98 4.0s. the reason being the switch to the Bosch motor control system. It is far less problemtaic than GEMS. The ride quality and comfort of the 4.0 is far better than that of the Disco. Why not keep the Disco, build it into an urban assault vehicle AND get the 99 4.0 for when you want to ride in style? then you have the best of both worlds...:)

Good idea Gil. THe Disco can be used for the apocolyptic escape vehicle, whilst still keeping the RR for the bi-weekly AB highlight appointments :) -- Shooter --- gotta run, on bosses computer while he drops duece

I'm looking at a Range Rover that i may buy. It's a 97 4.6 HSE with 112,000 miles on it. It needs new brakes, which will be about $800 as the rotors are warn down a good bit. He's asking $19,500 for the rangie and it's in excellent condition cosmetically, with only a head gasket leaking aside from the breaks mechanically. I was wondering if anyone has a new style range rover with that many miles and has any suggestions on it. I can do all mechanical work on the vehicle so i'd only have to pay for parts. Thanks for any input, i really like those air suspensions....they give you a feeling of superiority...plus u get a lot of looks in the parking lots when it starts up.
