to all of you who didn't or couldn't make it out to truckhaven - you guys missed an amazing time!
good people, the best 4x4xfar - and gourmet food. when was the last time you sat out under the stars and had seared scallop, garlic shrimp, rosemary potatoes, tri-tip, chili-chicken, korean beef. or woke up to blueberry pancakes, links, and scrambled eggs under an endless blue sky???
again my thanks to john and ho, the tireless iron chefs, the great group and our tireless and almost unstoppable landrovers.
it was awesome!!!!
oh i have coined a new phrase AFDDD- 'after wheeling dirt display deficiancy' after wheeling so hard- it's a shame there isn't more stuff on the out side of the car to show all the lesser worthless suvs what they cannot do!! now i can look at any of these poser suvs and laugh that they are mostly crap! i have some dust and true badge of honour in a bent r/r bumper!
and one last foot note on land rovers - if you can handle the rate of speed - driving 55mph yields nearly 20mpg on a stock d1, slightly less on a ome hd lifted rig with 265-75's.....
steve
ps: karen - you would of been proud of kim - she did great and the d2 did some amazing stuff!
By KJ on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 11:50 am: Edit |
Steve, you DID start a Truck Haven note! Hmmmm, the menu alone might be reason enough to go, sounds like Ho and John are multi-talented. Glad you had a good time, and we'll all be waiting for some pics. As for Kim's performance, it doesn't surprise me at all. Even when she's in the Margarita's she sounds like she's a serious off-roader (G). Glad to hear the D2 put in such a handy showing, too!

Hey Steve!
My name is Javier and I'm suffering from AWDDD. Except... I also have a battle scar to show for the run.
Karen, check out some pics I posted yesterday from my Friday and Saturday portion of the trip. They are under Event Schedule.
Cheers!

I cannot stop smiling.
My name is Kim and I have AWDDD. What a great group of people and what a great time! As Steve said, great food, good people, the best 4X4ing playground ...Everyone who was near me knows: I just kept muttering over & over, "it just doesn't get any better than this ..."
KJ: I can't take any credit at all for the tremendous 4X4 stuff that I experienced ... The credit goes to my D2. Let me tell you, that ETC DOES work. I even bonded with my truck and named it (something I didn't think I'd do ...) Thanks to Ho and John Lee and all the others who helped me "see the light" about how capable my Land Rover really is, and to "test the limits" (Ho, ). We had a few Disco's follow "Chickadee" & some Defenders through some real twisty, narrow, steep, and bumpy stuff - I'm proud to say that there were 2 (basically) stock D2's there that smoked!! My truck's name is "Ricky" (ask Steve about the "Lucy" trail - my husband Greg, who was above in a Defender with John M. watching is a VERY patient man, and Steve also now knows better than to follow Kim, AKA: "Lucy"). "Ricky" is doing just fine right now - nice and clean, and just needs a little orthodontic adustment to the brushbar, (I will never tease about that brushbar in front of "Ricky" again) and his rear bumper is ever so slightly rotated up, but this actaually seems to be rather an improvement (better depart angle for surfaces not quite as forgiving as those in Truckhaven). One note to other newbie (like myself) Land Rover owners - Get your rock sliders first (& diff guards). Those things paid for every nickle of themselves and more on this trip.
I have met some wonderful new friends and great people. There was not one person there that I didn't like. Everyone just kind of blended very harmoniously; No big egos, just nice and ready to have fun, with everyone contributing something (kind of a rare thing for a weekend trip with at least 15+ trucks). And thanks Javier, Scott, Peter, and all who have already posted pics (We will try to post as soon as we get them developed and scanned).
KJ: I feel more strongly than ever now, we'll just have to plan a trip where East meets West somewhere in between, where we can meet the Mid West!
Kim
Disco Diva (Ho you're funny!)
By KJ on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 11:54 pm: Edit |
Javier, great pics, but I'll have to really take a long look at them tomorrow (nearly midnight here!). Love all the Rovers in formation, heading out into the wilderness! Stray thought...it wasn't that long ago you met Ho and John, and now you got to take a happier kind of trip with them.
Kim, you bonded and named your Disco! Is it White Gold, btw? After testing the ETC what do you think about adding the CDL? Still sounds like that could improve performance, but I'm only desk-jockeying and wondering out loud. About that Midwestern link up, think this newbie could traverse the hills of say, IOWA???? LOL! Sounds like Truck Haven was a fabulous trip with good folks, everyone who went seems to be beaming! Now, what was that you were drinking, I couldn't make it out in the pic.....(G).
Karen
By Roverine on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 01:46 pm: Edit |
Yes, "Ricky" is White Gold (and I will now take a swing at anyone who calls him a fag!)
The drink? ... mostly (semi *G*) fine red wine - no way was this girl drinking lime filled margaritas or beer when there were no "facilities" (not even bushes) anywhere nearby. (well, if you've taken horses out on extended trail ventures, you know how to be ingenuitous, I guess - is "ingenuitous" even a word??, LOL)
KJ, you don't need to worry too much about the driving (I have a feeling it will come very naturally to you). ... You can always take a little class, and it really boils down to the type of people you're driving with. Try to surround yourself with other experienced, and well grounded, responsible drivers. (As opposed to crazy, irresponsble idiots, LOL!)- Just my 1.075 cents. For me, it's not so much the challenges, but more the destinations and the surroundings I like to travel, and being able to make there in COMFORT without breaking too much stuff. I want to know that I can handle obstacles that will invariably come up along the way. I can assure you, you have a very capable truck that will do a lot of the work for you right now as is. There is (IMOHO) not one other stock vehicle on the market that can perform like a stock Land Rover (for the moment, at least). CDL? ... hmmmmm, good question. .. I'm still interested for sure, but let's just say that I'm not in quite as much of a hurry right now; May be thinking some other things over first - like lights, improving front approach angle a bit - suspension, ... oh the list never ends! LOL!!)
Kim

By Eric N (Grnrvr) on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 03:07 pm: Edit |
Kyle, does that mean that you aren't going to the freedom concert at RFK this sunday. They will all be there you know. Ricky, Back Door Boys, Nsynch, Brittney, the whole gang.
By Roverine on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 03:07 pm: Edit |
NO NO NO NOT Ricky Martin!!!!(shiver) .. He's more of a Ricky Ricardo (NOT "Retardo" - I'll have no sly remarks like that about him) ... He just helped me out of a couple of "Lucy" situations ... I started calling, "Ricckkyyy, help me ..."
Kim
By Kyle on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 03:12 pm: Edit |

Something to keep in mind.

We do, we DO!
Theys big and BLUE!
gp, I think you're onto something, but I think it should be the LR Iron Chefs vs. Whoever the Jeep Crew cares to offer up. Wheeling in the background, with maybe a close up or two of a Rover pulling a Jeep out of a stuck. Ho, have you installed the wet bar in the minivan yet?
Karen
By Danno on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 10:49 am: Edit |
there was a 110 in KC that had a mini-bar as the spare tire carrier. i think Clay H has it on his disco now.
what about the Krispy Kreme vehicle.
hmmm, my friend Michael like KK's

a cookoff with jeepers? hehehe. i know some jeepers that can do some good cooking too. that can be fun. but they'd have to trailer, how would they carry the whole kitchen in the back of their little thing?
wetbar? hmm... i'll leave that to the alkies.
By Bluegill (Bluegill) on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 12:28 pm: Edit |
>"wetbar? hmm... i'll leave that to the alkies."

I left with 18 Tecates and 6 XX. I came back with 11 Tecates. Who was refilling my cooler with Tecate? Whoever it was is welcome to join me on any camping trip!
