Figured out this weekend what broke the 3/8" Amsteel - the crappy Warn fairlead. Warn makes their's from tubing with nylon bushings in either end to both give an inside diameter for the shaft to spin on and also to take up space between the end of the tubing and the fairlead bracket.

Since the pull angle was very sharp - the line was pulled totally against the bottom roller and then it also got pulled over to the left side where it was allowed to wear the nylon bushing and slip in between the bracket and the roller end. The bushing was melted away and their were strands of Amsteel embedded in it.

For now a washer is taking up the gap, but long term - I'll have some solid steel rolls made that are the correct width.

ahhhh,

For what it's worth, a 101 had a seized pulley that the winch cable goes through, and snaped a 3/8" steel cable also.

Now THIS has been a thread worth following. I was using my Superwinch X9 hard last weekend. Many rocks, double-line pulls, 17-33 degree accent with full camping load. Cable never appeared to contact any abrasive surfaces the entire time.

Quite a few frays though...and now that you mention it, the roller fairlead had been hit hard enough to impede friction-free rolling.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely repair my roller fairlead before using the replacement cable.

Got mine from www.gourock.com -they were running a special, but it is probably over. Also if you go to www.masterpull.com it lists their distributors.
