How do I rebuild the motor in the husky?
Stupidwinch wants $439 for the motor (if it is my fault, how I dunno as the POS has not done jack) and wants me to pay shipping both ways.
Screw that.
Any how to rebuild your electrical motor stuff out there? Any bolt in replacement?
Ron

Son OF a BITCH!!!! on that one point alone it should be rammed up a superwinch reps ass... And that god damned motor is 439 ??? oh the hell with that..
Kyle

I know.
I am seriously going to make stickers that say stupidwinch
Also
"in 90% of cases in is the users fault and you have to pay (even if it is in the warantee period)"
Ron
PS how do I fix it?
PPS I am kinda wishing it was an RE at least then the motor would be CHEAP shit!

I am SOL as that is the only winch that will fit our bumper.
I am sure david boyer is $$$$ too.

ron,
take it to a shop that rebuilds starters and see if they will do the motor for you. they might be able to do it.

You had it apart yet Ron?
Kyle

Sounds like a candidate for Kyle's window

I took it out last night. (thanks Dom!)
As soon as the boss says we are not sending it to stupidwinch I am opening it up.
Ron

Well , I am thinking the problem is going to be minor. Take that damn thing apart....I bet it was a bonded lead that came off...
Kyle

thanks
I will relay to the boss that you think it is something obvious.
Ron

Ron - I think Trevor deals with someone that does alts/starter rebuilds and reworks - maybe he could help??
Bill
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I am pretty sure that Ron has had some starter motors apart in his time. If he as he will see the problem pretty quick once he takes it apart. Man , I am stil reeling from the price tag on that very "Special" motor...
Kyle

Bill B. Good call. If I can't figure it out I will do that.
I have had one winch motor apart and a couple of generators (no starters, I have Spares if one goes ). The generators we will see as I am ditching the delco in Noah so one better work
. And thankfully the winch motor made it back together and now happily turns
as it was a broken brush mount thingy and needed some lube on the brake thingy at the end.
But I had instructions on that one. I am thinking the special motor might have a tamperproof feature (like crap that breaks off when you pull it apart or something) given its makers warantee policy.
Ron
PS Kyle you are giving me too much credit.

Naaaa, just pull the bastard apart on a nice clean surface. Gimmie the failure enviroment... (What was going on when it took a dump) and the failure symptom...
Kyle
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Failure environment:
2nd time winch used
free spooled out to tree stump (clearing trials course)
turned winch on to spool back in
under no load when failure took place
Failure symptom:
vvvveeeerrrrryyyyy slow spooling
weird noises
less than 15 seconds
took hand off controller
winch kept going
smoke came out from under hood
popped hood
ground cable on fire
power steering res. boiling
srs harness melted
everything hot hot hot
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Oh now that sounds really nice... I wish I could get my hands on it..... If it fried the ground things might look ugly in there. I am willing to bet one of those bonded straps came off in there and got into some other good shit.
Kyle
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Pretty much.
winch had maybe six pulls on it (2nd outing when used not second pull)
Ron
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Kyle,
Pretend I am an idiot (not that hard)
explain the bonded strap fell off again?
Ron
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hmm , ok , the motor has three posts on it for the fields and armature. On the end you can see its threaded. On the inside the armature has the straps that go to the brush holder bonded to the end of it , yeah , just bonded.. That can simply fall off as with the others. Was it stuck running when this happened no matter what you dd with the controller?
Kyle
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
It only ran for maybe 5 seconds after I took my hands off the controller. I didn't try to make it run any more (considering things were on fire and all...).
On a side note, I'd have to disagree with Ron as to the 6th pull scenario... If you'll remember, other people pulled us out using their own winches most of the time.

So nothing to lead you to believe that both solonoids were getting hot at the same time? And the flaming and all stopped imediately after release of the trigger?
Kyle
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Really Alyssa. You remember better than me.
Ah Kyle I dunno. The slowness probably should have tipped us off eh?
Ron
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Yeah , you really want to check solonoid operation. If they are screwing up and getting hot at the same time examine the remote and everything. If there is a problem there ram that in the stuporwinch reps ass as well. And fix it before even getting close to the truck with that motor again...

Solinoid checked out ok (tested right but when engaged would smoke a little) and the winch would not spin when "hotwired".
