If you are using an aftermarket chip your impressions? Who did you get it from? Approx cost. etc. I know personally what chips can do since I have installed one in my Audi. Curious about what they can do for a somewhat stock Disco. Only mods to the motor are K&N and NRP.

The only chip I know of is from RPI and ECR said that haven't got it quite figured out for NAS trucks. They can give you more specifics.

I just put an RPI chip on my NAS94Disco...definite improvement in mid range power and once over 3000rpm...I'm afraid to stress the tranny anymore...seems to use less fuel too...I already have their ignition amp and a K&N...next upgrade will be to the camshaft later on this year. Still sticking with the 3.9 for now...will replace with 4.6 if I wear this one out. The chip was NOT cheap at $400 but Chris at RPI is a fanatic and very good at answering questions by email or phone. I would definitely recommend his outfit. Once you have the chip, it costs little to update the chip if you change engine displacements. I definitely must have one of the most powerful 3.9s around here. BTW, with the chip I am running the ignition at 12 degrees static advance...and no pinging.

I bet you couldn't find more then 2-3% diff
in HP or torque anywhere across the rev range
after chipping a non-turbo engine...

Keith...come and drive my car...we are talking at least 10-15% improvement over stock. My other car is a Saab Turbo...(std chip)

Thanks for you Kind words.

Fuel maps from std are very very easy to improve upon due the many compromises, If our chipping does not achieve the results that most gain ( 10 -15% overall) its always due to some other significant engine issue that's marring the way.

USA Spec chips do slightly vary and we get little chance except trial and error to cover the very minor issues, But the deal is, if it does not get what you expect, assuming its working environment is appropriate. then return it for a refund.

Well, I drive a turbo car, too (Audi A6 2.7T).
It's only a matter of ~$500USD to go from 250
to 300+HP. But, what you're doing (as I'm sure
you know, having a 900T) is increasing the
boost pressure. More blow=more go (hehehe).

With a normally aspirated engine, I still have
big doubts you could see a 25HP gain with just
re-mapped fuel and ignition curves. Does RPi
have dyno data that proves this ??

Maybe with some variable valve, billion RPM Honda
engine, if you has access to the valve timing...

I'm not throwing flames at RPi - they have a good
rep. It's just that I've seen way too many "easy
horsepower" deals out there. Without major change
to other engine components (intakes, cams, ect)
I've never seen more then a few % difference.

If someone has dyno proof (preferably from a
chassis dyno), I'll belive it...

I understand your skepticism...and I had to sort out the std. (crappy) Rover ignition system first...this included magnacor wires, fixing the vacuum advance...leaky hose!!!, fitting a K&N and a freer flowing exhaust. Then I spent the money, $150.00 on an ignition amp from RPI that made an immediate difference in the cars pickup and then the chip itself. You can feel the difference in terms of mid range pickup...the engine felt starved of fuel before. It also pulls more vacuum according to the gauge I have fitted to the left of the speedo. I also tow a trailer...so more torque was my major motivation for all the mods. It's slower than my Saab 900T of course...( an 85 with 245K on it!!!), but now I know it's running as well as I can get it. Oh..and the ignition is at 12 degrees now...I'll let you know if it passes emmisions later this year when I will also be doing the piper RP4 cam from RPI too.

Discosaurus,

You ever on Audiworld? I am their with my 01' A4 Avant 1.8T. APR Chip, K&N and awaiting APR Exhaust. Enjoyed the gain on hp from 170 to 207hp. My Disco will never come close, I know that, But I share driving time with both.

pjkbrit,
How long have you been running the chip? I see you say the midrange helping you what about the low range when out 4 wheeling any big difference? Or is it all on the street which is not a bad place to have it.

Hi...the chip is recent and I use my disco on road almost all the time and for pulling a 3000lb capacity trailer with firewood etc. I haven't looked at Audiworld...but I am very impressed with that 1.8T motor. Last week I was in the UK and rented a Skoda 1.9 turbodiesel...50mpg guys, 110bhp and TONS of torque...that's a real Q car being built by VW for the price of a used ford...what a deal. BUT...UK gas/diesel prices are ridiculous...my disco at 15 mpg is still cheaper to run here in the US than that Skoda...

Chip issues

Maybe a look at our customer comments pages On chipping will help.

And more on other comments pages.

Its because Rover do it so badly, we can find so much so easily, and its not just fuel maps, the stock ignition on Rovers is not up to much either, so its easy to get lots with little effort.

I put a Superchip Icon in my Disco(acually 2, because of the Disco's ignition). It is nocicably faster throughout the rev-range. I get better MPG too. I also have a K&N airfilter, Borla exhaust system and Jacobs wiring. The Disco is much faster with these little upgrades. The Icons added +20hp. What the Icon does is increase the timing advance which is exactly what the Disco needs to get out of its
way. You would need to use premium fuel of at least 91 octane. The Icon is
$395.00 for each one.

I have a 95 Disco with the 3.9L V8. I know that Borla makes an exhaust system for the Disco 2 for $499(from Atlantic Britsh). I think that this is a good upgrade, the Disco sounds really good(especially when in neutral revving, crusing at 30mph and 45-50mph. It is quiet in the highway for long-distance trips), it also gives you more hp and better MPG. Installation is easy, do it yourself stuff and it comes with a 1,000,000 mile warrenty. Also K&N makes an airfilter for it. The filter will give you some power, but it will give you a noticable increase in MPG. Those are the only 2 that I can think of. You might want to call Superchips and see if they can put Icons in it. I would think that they would be able to.

Hope this helps.
