I have a '95 disco and the front end whines when I drive it. However, if I let up on the gas it goes away. I was told it might be the front differential and some lube might quiet it. Is this true and if so, what type of lube might I use?

sounds like it is normal to me. most likely your transfer case. have heard all kinds of things about this, but both my discoverys did this. never had an issue with my trucks either. i like the sound. :)

What Garrett said - but it never hurts to change the oil in the diffs and Tcase - 80W90 gear oil all around - at least then you've eliminated that as a possibility and gotten new fluid in there to boot.

When draining look for milky colored oil (ie: water in it) or oil with lots of metal filings.

Someone check me on the Tcase though - I know at least 96 up used gear oil and not ATF, but not certain about earlier.

I put climbling gear oil from Moroso in my TC and axles and things are much better!

Same for me, my 97 whines a little more as she ages, regardless of new fluids or not. No problems and like Garrett, I like the sound also.
One way to avoid the whine is to get a set of mudders, then the whine will vanish, along with the soothing sounds of the radio, passenger discussions etc...
