Hmmm...someone was sold on the lockers this past weekend! Cool.
Have you tried contacting Kristian Meyers?

Is Marin too far?

Maybe do it yourself? It is not too hard if you are handy.

PK, I was worried about setting the back lash. I understand it's not rocket science, but I am not sure I want to tackle this one on my own.

I've heard mixed reviews on these guys, thanks for the info, I'll give them a call and check it out myself. Have you used them before FJ?
Mike, do you know someone in Marin?
Scott H

I've used them before...let's just say I'd rather not go back. They do a good job though, don't get me wrong! Maybe you should ask the D-90 crowd, I know there are a few people there from the Bay Area who might know someone.

The guy in Marin is very good. He is a factory trained BMW guy who went out on his own. He worked on my BMW for 10 years prior to my selling it for the Disco. He does BMW, Rover, Mercedes etc. He installed my front and rear ARB lockers. He is meticulous, the three buttons look factory installed where the ash tray use to be. He installed my RT rock sliders, my RT 3" lift, RT rear links etc. He set up a custom Warn Multi Mount in the front higher than the Warn version. He is going to do my 4:10s as well, (I should have done gears with lockers but no $$ at the time). JP at A1 imports, 256-1949.

Scott,
All three of these people have experience with what you are looking to do. I don't know what they charge, but everyone in Northern california is overpriced. Check em' out.
Good Luck,
Rich

I would avoid British Car Co. if at all possible.

No Scott I haven't used them for any service, just parts. Their hourly rate is $79 which is considerable less than the dealer @ $110.
Supposedly, they are factory trained but not authorized. it is a small shop (they are in the rear of the building next to the airport).
I was also looking for a good mechanic that could work on my '96 Disco for all the major services (60,90, etc.) and was familiar with the mods (suspension, winch, bumpers, lockers, etc) that Rover people might do to their trucks.
If you find someone around here, please let me know.

I'll let you know. I am going to try JP in marin to do the locker install. Price was pretty good, and I'll let ya know how it went.

Scott- You can also remove the 3rd member yourself and then take it to the shop for just the install and backlash, etc. It'll probably reduce the labor cost. I can help you with removing the pumpkin...

Scott,
Tell JP Discovery Mike sent you!
Thanks
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Scott,
How much is JP charging you? Thanks
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
he quoted me 240. or 3 hours of labor @ $80. (I think that math's right)
Kristian
I was thinking about that, but I would have a hell of a time getting it over to somone. laura won't let me put a punkin in her car. :-)

Scott- If we schedule right (on a Sat.), we may have another Disco to transport the piece. By the way, the shop that did mine took 30min to pull the blown diff, install the locker, and set the backlash. The bill was $25.

LoL
Apparently they have rednecks in SF as well.

No, no, you got it all wrong. The shop was called "Moab Offroad." Pritchett killed the diff, Kyle helped me pull it, and Ho drove my ass to the shop for the swap. From there, it was 2200 miles straight home.

My comment was meant to imply that even in SF you can get a good deal.
Where I lived you got the best price and often the best work from the local redneck places.

Just got back, and JP at A1 was great! I hung around and watched, asked questions, and helped (although we may fight over the defination of "helped"). My Detroit is clicking. I would recommend him to anyone. He is not specifically a rover mechanic, but was very honest and trustworthy.
