I have a set of RTE springs, rancho shocks, shock mounts, and brakelines. The dealership in Scottsdale wants $1100 to start the job. Is there any other option out here in Arizona?
Thanks for any input

Are you kidding! Thats obscene!
DIY
Find someone local who can help you do it or find a redneck place and take it there.

Any good garage can do the work. Get some prices from local shops. But dump the Ranchos and go Bilsteins. I found 12" travel for $69 each. I am very happy with them. They are the 5100 shocks. John at Rt has approved them.

Might be able to kill two birds with one stone -local, redeneck=bluegill?

Damn $1100? Tooo much....I have run Ranchos and Bilsteins, I have no problem with either. They have both worked for me.
You have to be very cautious with 12" travel Bilsteins(depending on lift height), you may not have enought compression travel and when I read posts on Bilsteins breaking, makes me wonder.
By Ron on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 04:59 pm: Edit |
John,
The stocker style bilstiens break. Don't know if anyone broke a 5100 yet.

Alex Shubow with his 6100 12" travel shocks...Now the stockers may be too short(IMO) for some of the lifts or suspensions, definately to short for a 3" lift(IMO) unless you remount the stock lower mount.
By Ron on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:09 pm: Edit |
"This is relatively common with the stock-replacement bilsteins. Has happened on 2 of mine. Never happned on the 6100s."
-Alex
Yes stock bilstiens too short. I like 10in fronts and 12in rears with 2-3 lift but what you really want to look for is compressed length and extended length yada yada yada . . .
By John on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:13 pm: Edit |
Lol, I have a jammed 12" 6100 of his here at the shop...The thing about Bilstein is 12" advertised travel is 12" with a longer body, total of 2" longer than the Rancho 12" travel...Rancho advertised travel is only 11 1/4". Damn. you must sit on this screen all day Ron...lol
By Ron on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:19 pm: Edit |
John,
so alex was lying eh . . hehehehe
like I said compressed length and extended length yada yada yada.
Warn XT 10in fronts
I check in a lot, plus I don't forget much of anything which helps.

I really do like the 7100 short body 12" travel shock with the "un-needed" reservoir, as I am now using that on my std. RTE mounts actually spaced up 1" on the lower mount but with a 4" lift. The 360/80 valving is all around sweet.
By John on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:23 pm: Edit |
I had to do a special upper mount and lower the lower mount with a spacer plate to adjust his travels yada yada stuff, which finally worked for Alex. He likes his Bilsteins. Are the XT's loop to stem for stock front mounts?

A series II is even easier Seann...Look up a Rover club out there for some help.
By Ron on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:28 pm: Edit |
John,
XTs I have are stem to stem and in the stock location.
Sean,
well then that different, sortof. fronts are more of a pain in the DII, but 1100 is still WAY too much.
DIY or find a redneck place.
By Ron on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:29 pm: Edit |
Easier my ass!

Lol, tricks of the trade...I guess it seems easier when Drew does them for me...lol
By John on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:33 pm: Edit |
Seann, you got the lower front loop mounts I sent you I assume.
By Ron on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 05:37 pm: Edit |
LOL,
Sean its not bad at all. And with new brake lines it solves a lot of the challenge.
The two things with a DII:
1. You have to take off the crossmember (no biggy 8 bolts)
2. The front lower shock mount is kinda funky and tough to line up especailly as the stock lines are short and attached to the lower spring mount.
Other than that they are fairly comparable.
The first D1 fronts I did took 90minutes, the first DII fronts I did took 3hours.

Sean,
If you can't DIY, go to a redneck place and get an hourly rate ... I did the same job myself on a D1 in an afternoon with Kyle's instructions posted here under tech using basic tools and a floor jack. With air tools and a hoist, it would have taken me half the time. For half that, you could fly me down and I will do it for ya ... it's getting cold up here already.
As for the Rancho's ... I wasn't sold on mine until I took the time to play with settings - now I would recommend them.

John I did get the shock mounts, all I can say it everything you make is bomb proof.
Well, the keg idea isnt gonna work, they dont have what we need to get it done.
Sooo, anyone in AZ wanna install a lift $$, send me an email.
Thanks much for all the help guys. Keepin the Disco dream alive!

they dont have what we need to get it done.
Huh?
You need two jack stands, two jacks (you have one already), a set of wrenches, a jar with a piece of hose, and a good attitude.
Ron
PS where in AZ? I like murray's flight idea.

Im in Scottsdale area this week, normally in Tucson but want to get the lift on.LoL.. Rover before college! Cuz the car always helps get the girls in the back.
Seann
LoL...These Jeepers cant tell there foreheads from their asses, knowing them they hopped half the crap from beer $$$ Look what college does to us youths.

So do I ... I had to scrape my windows this morning and use the rear window defrost Seriously Seann, if you got some friends that know how to turn a wrench, it's a very straight forward job.

Alright its question time. Im eye balling the car, rear shocks seem simple enough. Front shocks not too bad. I have the tools I need for the shocks. Now, the SPRINGS. What are the most basic tools i can use to get these springs in?
And when installing these ranchos, does anyone know if i use any of the hardware rancho supplies, or what? I have the mounting options of standard bolt mount, standard sleeve, which one should I follow? AHHHHH the axiety is building.

it's a D2 - anything special for the fronts?

Expedition Exchange has a write up on installing an OME suspension(springs, shocks) on a Disco2. Go here: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/disco2frontcoilsnew.htm
By MA on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 08:27 pm: Edit |
Usually shops(that know a thing or two about Rovers) charge $60-$70 per hour for installation. It should take 4 hours or less for them to do it(on a Disco1).
By Bluegill (Bluegill) on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 08:35 pm: Edit |
Thanks for the link, MA. I knew I'd seen that write-up somewhere before.
Seann, we'll follow King Lee's directions from when they did Han's D2. We're set. I'm in town this weekend and may be able to get to it then. Then we'll go drive all over LR Scottsdale's front lawn and you can wave the fistfull of cash you saved at them. What's your schedule?

Have one more question for anyone who can answer it. I am not sure, but do I need to lengthen my ABS line, or what was it that I needed to make longer or relocate? Was it needed??? Cant remember and am wanting to get everything done in one swoop.
Thanks much
Seann
LoL..Bill hope to see you Saturday!
By Danno on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 09:15 am: Edit |
no need to lengthen ABS (at least on DI)
you'll need a spring compressor for the front.
if you don't have one, you can use some tie down straps.
By John on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 11:17 am: Edit |
ABS wires can be lenghtened simply by cutting and adding the same size strand wire(soldiering would be the best), the wires arent shielded on the sensor lines and we did try it to see if it works. Simply use a heavy split tube cover over the extended lines.
By Seann on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 11:30 am: Edit |
John is it a must to lenghthen the ABS?

Good question... Will I need to lenghten mine with your two inch lift kit?
By John on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 12:13 pm: Edit |
Seann, they will be tight with the lift, use your discression as I dont have enought input yet to know the fine line point. Let me know if you do.
Eric....No, and if snug, you can simply reroute the line, self explainatory when you get there.
By Eric N (Grnrvr) on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 12:38 pm: Edit |
Thanks John.. Worse case I lengthen them.. I can work the soldering iron.. Comes from years of racing those little off road RC cars.. I miss doing that..
By John on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 - 01:07 pm: Edit |
I did not have to lenghten mine at 4" lift nor Drew at 5" lift, so you are safe.
