Looking at Mantec and ARB snorkel kits. Seems like they provide some benefit in water, even though many say the electronics are still a problem? What are the benefits of adding a snorkel? Do they harm anything? Do they make more wind noise? Worth Getting?
thanks,
Carl

you also cleaner air when in dusty conditions. i've always wanted one mainly for the coolness factor, kinda like kyles, which wasn't fully connected last time i saw him

an arb safari snorkel does the following
1: provides cooler air in desert conditions vs underhood temps
2: ram air effect at fwy speeds for a little extra oommph - especially up hills
3: protects against water ingestion
4: makes kids look and point and the occasional cute female ask what it is for!!
needless to say i like mine!

How do the Mantec vs ARB compare? Looks like the Mantec has a much cleaner hole in fender vs the ARB which takes up the whole fender?

See the installation instructions for the Mantec in the Tech section - photos abound. Its stronger (all steel) and looks better than the ARB (IMVHO). See one in action:

Never stalled since I installed.

Plus you get a 5% to 7% loss of power.

Careful we will start calling your a poser with talk like that!

robert, we are all poseurs at heart.

do any of us "really" need to do the things that we've done to the disco's? not really, but it makes us happy
and i call this pose, "Steel Blue"

the does feel ever so slightly pokier around town - but more power on the fwy, so the powerloss is a trade off. the dust and cooler air on our desert trails out here in calif. are real benefits. poser? ABSOLUTELY! - but not as bad as the kamei X1 kit i used to have on my scirocco....

Worse... I think it is MGD... YUKK... I just don't get that...What is the point of having something that you never drive for fear that it might get a spec of dust on it or god forbid it gets rained on... Crome shocks?? WTF... Bet you he has a crown air freshener..

does the snorkel actually reduce power? any solutions better?
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I have talked to people that have put a chip in their truck to make up for the power loss from the snorkel. Put in lockers or gears or a nice lift with the money.

I have a fist air freshener in my disco.. Power to the people, you know what i'm sayin?

What exactly is the problem with fording water with the Disco's?

Chad,
D2 has a water sensor just after the air filter. It will cut out the engine immediately when water hits it (if you're lucky and the engine's not too fast) and stop you hydrolocking the engine.
I stalled in two fairly deep water holes this summer, before I added the mantec.
Since then, I have done deeper than those, and its been fine. Water was up to the wheel arch tops, and even the door handles in places.

Dean,
have you felt a lose in power since you added the snorkel?
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
The arb looks the part. The mantec looks like a little tube. Just get the Arb, you wont regret it.
The real point of any snorkel is..THEY MAKE YOUR LR LOOK COOL!!

Dean,
Wondering how much water get in the interior when your rig dive that deep?

I think the benefits of a snorkel are substantial. My air filter is tons cleaner after a run with the snorkel fitted. It's not even close.
Some dismiss the snorkel on the ground that our NAS engines are not waterproof, so the snorkel is waste of money. I disagree. While our ignition systems are not waterproof and my engine may stall in deep water, I would much rather short out something than ingest water and hydrolock my engine. The results of hydrolocking the engine can be disastrous. A snorkel is cheap insurance if you wade a lot.
I have not noticed any performance difference with the snorkel fitted and not fitted. Granted, I'm not a fast driver and my Defender isn't exactly a racing car, so other people may get different results. But the only difference I experience with the snorkel fitted is the sound of air being sucked through the snorkel's mouth at start-up and shut-down.

I agree with John...I have a Safari snorkel on my DII. No loss in performance! I put it on only because of finding water in the intake after a swallow water crossing...and I put a new air filter in when I made the change and it's much cleaner...beyond that, it looks cool...

Ram air is one thing you wont get with anything on a Disco. I have seen quoted ram pressure is about 0.25 PSI at 150 mph, so forget that. Cooler, cleaner air yes, and cooler produces more power.

ARB or Mantec? does the ARB ever get hung up on stuff? more work to install? less? more waterproofing neccessary on either one?
hmmmmm

Here is the MAIN issue I have with the ARB. That poor ABS plastic thing is just begging to be cracked open by a tree.
Install,
Trust me. Go buy the right hole saws. right Dom

i have to disagree on the ram air on a disco. i have the arb snorkel on my d1. i have driven the same stretch of hwy with the snorkel forward and reversed with and w/o kn filter.
and definately on powering up hills - snout forward makes a big difference in power and shift points. also the snorkel does great on the trails out here in the desert as the motor gets the outside 100 degree air vs. the under hood way hotter air.
the kn is better power but slightly less mpg as compared to stock filter. also ran a fully cheese holed air box and there is more low end power - but you loose it on the fwy. best mpg is cheese hole box with stock filter. best power is snorkel forward with kn filter.
best over all i have found is snorkel forward - stock filter. (though i am going to reoil my kn and give it a second shot to see what happens - maybe it's too dry?)
i think a snorkel is a big benefit to any serious off road rig - regardless of water fording.

Charlie,
I had no water ingressing at all, perhaps a few drops. But then my rig is new and the seals are still in pretty good shape. Another guy did the same thing and water poored out as he opened the door.
Check all the seals around the doors - they go all the way round. WHere it joins at the bottom may be worth checking carefully.
You can open the doors for a night to let the rubber expand and that might help - but not if you park on the road I guess you could also try putting chalk or something on one side and closing and opening and seeing where there is a break in the seal (although I never tried this).
Mantec seems way stronger aand better looking than the safari - solid steel all round. Installation in tech section.
