I get a horrible vibration when I hit 65mph and it gets worse the faster I go. The wheels are balanced, so my guess is that it is some goofy bearing in the trany or possibly my missing harmonic dampener. The best I can guess is that the "harmonic dampener" is nothing more than a weight. If so, since it is missing, could that be the problem

The harmonic damper should NOT cause any problems if missing, as far as I have been able to investigate. Suggest you erase that one from your list of (im)possible problems causing the nasty vibs.

On Otto's pages you'll find links to sites covering procedures for finding the causes for your worries. A LR tech bulletin linked to, will give you the long procedure for eliminating
(im)possible reasons. Others links shows shortcutting ways.

Hope this helps, Frode

certainly would not be the harmonic damper. mine just busted off a few weeks back and the difference is hardly noticable if at all. there are lots of other things that can cause this besides unbalanced wheels. typically the vibration with be reduced at some point with speed with wheels, but it sounds like it could be a series of things. i think you or someone posted about this just a few days ago. but the panhard, steering stablizer and other steering components need to checked for tightness. just go over your front end well and make sure its all snug. check the driveline as well....like the rotoflex if you have one or U joint if you don't. did you just have the wheels balanced recently? is that why you are so sure it is not this? this solved my issue once even eventhough i thought for sure it was not the wheels. can easily loose a wheel weight on a trail or anywhere for that matter. may want to double check.

The wheels are balanced

Are you 100% sure? Look for evidence of missing weights or clumps of mud caked on the inside.

How about the lugnuts being tight? That would be guess #1.

Odds are it is somethign obvious

had the same problem - check for scalloping of your tires - evidently pretty common on stock tires goodyears with 25000 miles.
