Went to a CAR wash last week, and my '97 Disco died right in the car wash and had to be towed out. Left the car over night and the next morning it turned over with out a problem. My dealer tells me that the electronic control is in the engine compartment (passenger side)and some times it comes into contact with water. He went on to say that this sometime happens during heavy rain. Has anyone else come across this issue? and if so please let me know how you were able to handle.

Nothing here. I have also recently used a jet wash to clean the engine compartment out (looking for oil leaks etc.), and everything was fine.

My local car wash does not recommend taking 4x4's through it as the brushes sometimes rip off the rear spare! So - not sure how a car wash would handle it.

Find the box in question - and seal it, or put it in a water tight bag or something.

Please tell me that your dealer in not suggesting that one the most capible off road machines ever built in not car wash safe?
Hope you didn't get too hurt laughing your ass off at him.

If it's a new truck, tell him fix it! If it's older, check your spark plug wires, and ignition system.

the ecu in the 97 disco's were more vulnerable to water than the 96's.
(it was positioned differently on the fender)

i witnessed a 97 dealer vehicle splashing thru the pine barrens and
come to a complete and total halt after getting water splashed up
onto the passenger's side inner engine compartment.

they were towed out of the woods and the ecu had to be replaced.

i've power washed the engine on my 96 disco without a problem.

On your 1997 Disco with ECU on inner passenger side of engine compartment, run a bead of silicon or latex sealant around the edge of the box. Seal her right up.

carry a crapload of WD-40 too, if the stuff gets wet, spray her down under the hood, and that fixes it a lot, spray, wait, spray some more, wait, spray...and THEN turn her on, it usually starts right back up if it was just water...WD40 and duct tape can fix the world usually....
