Hey, guys. I have a desire to transport a fullsize mattress and box springs from DC to Charlotte this weekend. I know it'll hang off quite a bit on all sides (the roof is approximately twin bed sized). I'm getting rather concerned about the "wing" effect at decent speeds or in sidewinds. Anyone ever done such a thing? Anybody think I'm crazy? My disco is stock with Bilsteins, factory load bars only.

I have the Safety Devices roof rack on my D2 and I transported a queen size box and matress on top. It was just a little wider than the rack and fit perfectly length wise. I used two ratcheting straps and it held down fine on the freeway. I guess that doesn't help you much since you don't have a rack but you could prb do the same without. For you, I would be inclided to strap through both the front windows and the rear windows for better support as opposed to using the rails (rails are narrower than matress right?) Kinda reminds of the VW comercial where they strap the bed to the roof and can't open the doors....

Man o Man Tate.....by the time you make it down to South Hill VA, you will probably wish you spent the money on renting a U-Haul trailer......
The constant worry about if the mattress is secure enough whil driving down 95S until you reach Pettersburg will drive you insane....trust me-been there done that- and when you finally make it lonely 85, you'll be thinking about things like should I stop and resecure the mattress,,,,,blah, blah, blah.....
if you really take the necessary time to SECURE the mattress down, and I mean secure it...you'll probably make it to Greensboro, only after several stops to refuel...notice the wind today? well I think it's supposed to be the same all weekend......When I needed my King Size delivered to me up here in Md...I just traded my 94 with a friend who has a long bed Chevy pickup for the weekend...
Good Luck, and please be careful....

I was right behind a truck with a camper shell hauling a tied down mattress and box spring the other day...damn thing slid right off the truck in front of me! Good thing I was a ways back and could swerve to miss it....pay the 19.95, rent a small u-haul trailer, and make use of that receiver hitch! You will be sorry if you don't. Plus you will have room for plenty of other stuff...Don't do it Tate...

Thanks for the input, guys. I am rather wary of trying to get it all the way to Charlotte. I'm confident in my ability to strap it down well, but I'm not so confident in the ability to do over 20 mph on the interstate while traveling in a straight line. I'll do a test fit driving it to work and back on Friday. If that's bad, it'll stay here. If it's not too bad, I'll try and do it. It's not worth renting a trailer large enough to hold it. Looking at the trees swaying outside, just driving the disco down there will be fun, mattress or not. Something about a large brick getting blown sideways... :-)
