but it looks like the inner deminsions only come to about 43 inches, i can see how the outter is 50 inches, but it come in at the top

Johnvigg,

To the best of my knowledge, the inner width of the roof rack is 48." Hold on...OK, I just measured the inner width to be 48" exactly. I have also fitted a 48" wide piece of aluminum for the roof rack as flooring. You should be able to fit your blank signs in there without any issues.
