I am thinking of putting a set of B.F.G. 245/70-16
on my series 2 Disco with Self Leveling Suspension.
Seeing that the only time that I will be doing any 4 wheel driving I will have the rear suspension raised, (nearly 2 inches) I am assuming that I don't need to do any suspension mods? If this is not the case, what is the largest tyre size that would fit without mods?
Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

i think your tire choice is too conservative- the TReK disco II run 245-75-16 no sweat - and i might be wrong but you can run 265-75-16 without a lift on a d2 - i hope some of the d2 guys will jump in here with a confirmation. most of the guys with the ome lifted discos run 255-85-16s

best of luck

brett,
245/75 w/o lift looks just about proportional. w/ moderate lift and 265/75 looks good. 265/75 w/o lift is doable w/o major problems but tires look very big.

and has any of you tried or know about fitting 235-85-16 without mods or lift on the disco II? Thanks

Re: 235-85-16 (stock Defender Tyres) Can be run on stock suspension, but expect rubbing on the radius arms in off-road conditions.
Lift, bumper change (trimming or replacement), and adjustment of steering stops (or wheel off-set) are recommend for serious use. Or so I am told.

alberto

the other caveat re: 235-85s on a dII is rim width - maximum recommended rim width is 7" for the 235's - so if you are staying with the stock 8" wide - then you should go with the 265-75's

Here in Australia the Standard Disco II comes with a 16" x 7" while the "ES" comes with 16"x8" rims standard (you can opion up (?) to 18"x8" rims if your heart desires)

So.....how does the 245-75-16 differ from the stock 255-65-16's on my '00 Disco II? The stock tires do not look right at all. I want something more proportional to the overall look of the vehicle.

Please forgive my ignorance, I am an airplane mechanic. Airplanes do not get modifications for fun and looks.

Here is a picture of my Disco II with the non-proportional 255/65r16's. What do you guys recommend for this non-lifted vehicle?

bear in mind the factory always goes conservative- if i had a non-lifted disco II - i'd do 245-75 (ala TReK disco)- but i'd also see how 235-85s looked first, just to be sure!
