As usual I am out in the mountains enjoying my ride and the scenery. I get out to stretch my legs and to check out the flex on my truck. It was flexed! The right rear and left front where fully stuffed. I get back in to go but the vehicle doesn't move. Give it some gas and still nothing. Noticed that the other two tires are spinning, but not the two that are stuffed. Thinking back I should have put the selector in 1st and just let it crawl on through on its own power. Didn't do it. Oh well! Anyway, are there any ideas out there as to why this happened? I'd like to hear them. Thanks!
Zane
Ps I had the CDL locked and unlocked and still no forward movement. Though flexed out, all four tires where firmly planted on the ground.

You were cross-axled, it sounds like... (This wasn't on level ground, was it??? )
Uh... all 4 tires FIRMLY(?) on the ground?? And it wouldn't go?? At all?
Just where exactly did you stop?? Picture?
How did you get going again? Was there someone there to give you a tug?

I think what happend is that the two tires that were on the ground were barely on the ground and thus weren't getting very good contact with the ground so they spun.. CDL only locks the drive shafts not the Diffs.

This is one area that Rear dif locks come into thier own, or if you had a series 2 disco the Electronic Traction Control would have done the job

Next time, try a little left foot braking to stop the tractionless wheels from turning, and shifting the drive to the other wheels
Plan B is to get a tug from someone...
BTDT
Would love a locker to get out of situations like that but No $$$ for now

L,
The ground wasn't level though you couldn't tell that while in the Rover. The two spinners where on softer ground, but they where planted or not. Left two small holes from digging. Didn't take a picture since it was dark out at that point. I was on my way home. Just put it in reverse and backed out. I was going up at the time. Should have mentioned that earlier. I'll have to try the left foot braking technique next time. Never would have thought of that. Lastly, what is cross-axled? Thanks for the input!

thats' cross axled, although the right front tire there is touching the ground, not much pressure is on that end. so it could spin and dig if the soil is soft. the rear left... no comment

Ho's pegged it, although with a dramatic example!
That situation will beat an open-diffed Rover... makes a locker get put high on the priority list.

a not so dramatic example:

Question along these lines... do we have limited slip axles or free spinning one wheel johnny's? It seems that a limited slip axle, just short of a true locker would help in situations like this. Maybe I have it but just didn't know...

lynden, discos come with open diffs.
you usually find those in the JGC LIMITD edition. LOL

So, since those two tires have no pressure on them that means no forward progress? Interesting! Maybe a year from now I'll get a Detroit with the HD axles, but not before then. I need to know all I can about my vehicle in stock trim. Anyway, I went back to that spot and snapped some pictures. I'll post them as soon as I can figure out this digital camera stuff. I'm a newbie at it. Thanks for all of the info that you all posted here!

good approach ZP, if you can dominate your disco in stock form, you'll be in good shape. you'll learn to pick good lines in no time.
i, on the other hand, can't drive worth shit. therefore i need all the help i can get from lockers and such.

My understandind of an L.S.D. is that you need some resistance from the spining wheel so that the cluch in the dif will engage the gears, so in a true cross axle situation they would be compleatly useless
