Ok, I know this has been discussed many times and some of you guys will want to tell me to read the archives, but I have done that, that is how I have narrowed my choice down to these two.

I have a '95 Discovery with OME MD shocks and springs and 10MM spring packers all around. I think I can use the 245/75's with no problem, but would like to go to the 235/85's if at all possible. My questions are:

1. Since the 235/85's are the same width as stock, will they require any trimming, or in any case ANY MORE THAN the 245/75's?

2. Will the 235/85's require taller bumpstops? If so, how much taller and will that loss of uptravel effect off-road ability to any great extent? Will they require me to make any other adjustments?

3. Will the 235/85's place undue stress on my axles or drivetrain? Will I wind up having to replace/repair a lot? How much better in this respect are the 245/75's?

4. What effect will either tire have on mileage. I am currently getting about 12 mpg around town, and would hate to go much lower.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

marc, you can fit 235/85 with about the same amount of trimming as the 245/75 woudl require.
no bumpstops needed.
perhaps adjust the steering stops.
bigger tires will induce more stress in the drivetrain, but it's one of those things that you'll jsut have to take a chance. or you can upgrade your drivetrain componenst and not worry about it.
mileage depends on your driving. i've had worse and better mileage with taller tires. if you jsut cruise on the hwy, you'll get better mileage, but if you floor it constantly in the city, it'll be worse than with 245/75.

marc, my question to you is: do you really like the 235/85? regardless of the issues you are questioning? i mean, are you in love? if so, just do it.... and along with the HD drivetrain components, put in some 4.11 gears. you'll have a big smile on your face.

It is all about the money Ho - at this point I have just started modifying the beast, and I have a lot of things I would rather do first. Do you think I can get by with my stock drivetrain on 235/85's, or would I do better to get the 245/75's and maybe look at moving up on the next set?

here's a pic of my disco with 235's and OME HD/MD's. drivetrain is stock. running RTE 3" springs now and still have a stock driveline.

marc, sorry to say but there's no real accurate answer to this drivetrain issue.
some have gone long ways with stock stuff wearing 235/85... some not so lucky.

do you go to vegas often? if so, you'll know the thrill. :)

marc...

....tall tires are the mark of the jedi. yes, tall tires they must be! master ho has seen the future and can tell much! he who uses 245-75 has learned much. he who uses 235-85 knows all....

a kinder nicer bobafet in a chewbaka kinda way....

Trimming not bad. Dom you got pics somewhere

2. Will the 235/85's require taller bumpstops? If so, how much taller and will that loss of uptravel effect off-road ability to any great extent? Will
they require me to make any other adjustments?

Adjust steering stops. Bump stops, probably not but would not hurt to put on 3.5inchers.

3. Will the 235/85's place undue stress on my axles or drivetrain? Will I
wind up having to replace/repair a lot? How much better in this respect
are the 245/75's?

No undo stress. The size is stock on some 110s and 265 75 was the D90 size. More stress than stock yes, undo no.

4. What effect will either tire have on mileage. I am currently getting
about 12 mpg around town, and would hate to go much lower.

It will make it APPEAR substantially worse (bigger tires will effect speedo/odometer) but in actuality no more than at worst 5-10% change. Tread/tire really makes the most difference.

Marc,
I just installed 235/85 BFG Commercial T/A Trac's last week and I love it. I am running OME MD springs without the spacers you have and it looks MUCH better. I had to trim the rear wheel wells a little, but it wasn't hard at all. Go with the 235/85's. You will be much happier in the end.

Go with the 235...I didn't decide till I was in the tire store and went with 750 r 16 that extra space underneath if you have it you'll love it.....
Cut the horizontal lip of the rear wheel arch about an inch back, on one side it folded back nicely and the other side has never touched...
Suspect I bent something....
