OK - so what is the ~6" rubber wheel behind the front diff do? I've tried to figure it out what it is for, but can't....

Harmonic balancer.
It falls off and then gets dragged behind attached to its little metal wire chain.

actually harmonic "damper"
If you lose your balancer, well then life gets really exciting for a short time!
