Do you think, as a rear recovery point, if you
would take the hitch ball off the reciever and
replace it with a 3 ton shackle be strong enough for recovery? It's a standard fare receiver from U-Haul 5,000lb tow rating. Also what can one do about a front recovery point for a '97 dicso with a LR brush bar?

Thanks,
Brian

1. Yes

2. Only get stuck in a way that you can be pulled out backwards

Here is a follow up.

On 1 flip it upside down to get better clearance

On 2 you can use 3/4" d shackles in the rings at the bottom but make sure the bolts holding it on are tight and have someone pull you out SLOW as they tend to rotate and take out hoods and fenders and such.

well you are in a situation with the front recovery like many of us. i know ron or leslie (if forget who mentioned this to me) will tell you that my brushguard rotated a bit when i was getting hauled out of the mud last month, but it did work. :) i am sure that would have been the highlight of the evening along with John's diff going *bang* if it did smash into the hood!! i have a 3/4" shackle hanging from each loop at the bottom the the brushguard. i have used that location (with and without the shackles) several times without any damage. most important thing to do is make sure the bolts on the frame are as snug as you can get them. will help with it not rotating as much. there will be some rotation, but it can only rotate up so far and the bolts will bottom out on the frame eventually. this will work until i get a new front bumper, but until then this works for me.

What's the advantage of the shackle in the rear receiver over just looping the strap over the hitch pin? Maybe the ability to use the winch of the guy behind you?

sometimes its difficult to get a hook through the hitch pin because the hook is too big when using a cable with a winch.

I've never had this problem, but I would worry about the pin bending from the weight inside the hitch enought to get it stuck. Using a hitch would avoid this, I'm guessing it'll only sheer off.

ho~

if we are junkies than you are the dealer.

just think how (more) pathetic i would be if this site did not exist.

love cruise, temptation island 2, who wants to be a princess, etc. would be my life. and drinking endless amounts of PA finest beers from dusk til down and wandering the campus during the day looking for the ultimate freshman.

wait......that doesn't sound all the bad. nah....this 30 year old will have better luck sticking to this.
