Is anyone out there selling re-builds yet? I looked into it a couple of years ago for my alternator, and didn't have much luck. Ended up buying a used one. Any ideas on starters? Or off-brands? Thanks in advance. Mine isn't dead yet, but when the car is running hot (extended off-road) it makes a heluva racket, so I'm trying to plan ahead.

PS Also, I need the two cooling fans in front of the radiator. They aren't dead yet either, but the bearings are going. I'm thinking used is probably best for these. Other ideas, or parts matches? They are a japanese part.

You should check around your area for local rebuilders in the good ol' yellow pages, well, as long as you live in a fair sized city. I found a guy in my area that had rebuilt starters from Jonh Deere tractors to Porsches to Kenworths. I was really surprised. Plus the guy told me if he didn't happen to have one in stock he'd rebuild mine in a few days. Same went for alternators.

Enoch you're in my neck of the woods right. If you can't find anyone nearby I can help you out.

Cooling fans?

They're not. They're actually condensor fans activated by the air conditioning. All they do is force air over the condensor to make your a/c more effective.

Disco cooling is provided by the BIG fan behind the radiator. That's it.

If the condensor fans really are going to die on you - try sourcing them at any wrecker yard. They're probably the same unit used in a heap of Jap. pax sedans.

Al- thanks. I'll check around. I did realize those fans are only for AC. They run a lot though, even when the AC is not on. I'll probably pull one and carry it around and find a match. Do you have rebuild shops for starters, etc. in Richmond? Not too many here in C-ville.
Thanks, Enoch

yes, many rebuild shops around here. If it's just a solenoid that's messed up you can install a new one(ford type) on the firewall. email Kyle and he can describe how to.

Al- I don't think it's the solenoid. It typically acts up after it has been running hot, and I have to restart it frequently. (on the trail) After I start it, it stays engaged briefly, and grinds. Brushes may be stuck, not sure. It's not dead right now, but I imagine it will be. If I had a 5-speed, I'd be less worried about anticipating the repair! I need to check my shop manual and see what it says about rebuilding. If I could get components, I could possibly rebuild it. If not, I'll contact you about a rebuild shop. Thanks, and by the way, when are we going to wheel? We've found some sweet trails in GWNF lately...

Enoch,

Haydensville Alternator does a good job rebuilding starters and I'm running one of their rebuilds in my RR. They are located halfway to Richmond from C'ville just off of I64. 804-457-4145

We can go any weekend after I get my truck fixed. Been waiting on a set of axles and a detroit from Bill at GBR but all his shit is on back order. Going on 3 weeks now. Call me at work at 804-484-3506 if you want to meet up sometime. I also have a spare starter lying around if you want to try and fix that and swap it out one weekend.

Driving my honda is getting old....
