I looking around for a local shop that can install the OME HD Suspension on my Disco 1. To my surprise, one of the shops tell me that they just finished doing this work on a Disco and that they found that they needed to install "spacers" because the new springs made the Disco lean towards the passenger side. He mentioned this just so I would know that I may need to pay for this additional labor ($150).

I asked the guy if he was sure that this wasn't specific to this particular Disco and not due to the springs. His replied was that they have seen a few Discos where they didn't need to install these "spacers."

Another shops tells me that I shouldn't replace the stock steering damper with the OME one. Instead to use a new Land Rover OEM one.

My gut tells me this is a bunch of crap and to keep looking for other shops. However, I wanted to ask those of you who have done this work before I completely dismiss these two shops.

Thanks,

Buy your springs from Expedition exchange or greatbasinrovers.com and they will sell you equal length springs, either both driver sides, or both passenger side springs. And have someone who knows Landrovers put them on or else do it yourself. It's not hard
My OME steering dampner makes my 96 Disco handle better. Absolutely no complaints. It's a D-90 dampner relocated to the front .

F.J., which shops are you going to? The lean has been discussed about a zillion times here, but to make a long story short (you might not believe it, anyways)...is so that when you get in the disco on the drivers side, it will level out (this is of course when you are in it alone). Hard to believe? It's true.

Cal, did you buy a damper relocating kit?

it would be fine if he said either use a stock or OME steering dampner, but to NOT use a OME.......i would say he hasn't a clue. i did hear some complaints about the early Bilstein ones, but never a OME.
they do lean.......some don't as much as others and some not at all. but mine does. and my driveway slopes to the right as it is. so it really looks like it's leaning bad. i am just tossing the OME springs on as they came from the land of downunder. we shall see. if it bothers me i will put spacers in........otherwise no biggie.

I've been told that the three first years of production suffers this "lean". Andrew from Famous Four says they manufacture a nylon ring to correct it. I have problem seeing it should cost an awful lot of money to put the spring into some kind of nylon retainer giving additional height...

if you are worrried about the terrible 'lean' - which is a 10mm difference between springs - as the others said get matched springs or buy one 10mm spacer and slap it on the ps spring - problem solved for about $10

i have OME steering dampers on both my disco and rangie, and am VERY happy with them. They are great at masking all the imperfections in the steering set-up. Much tighter than the stock dampers, so if you have any steering wobble, this is your cheap cure (for the symptoms, of course).

My 2001 Disco2 has stick suspension and when off is about an inch lower on the passenger side than on the drivers side..
