I've never used it myself but the two people I know running RW are Brian Bonner in his D90 and Kevin ?? in a RR. Stuff seems to be pretty sturdy. Brian has beat his to HELL and back (guy doesn't work and wheels EVERY FRIGGIN DAY in the rocks) and that RW stuff has been on for 3+ years with no probs.

i'd dont want to sound like a broken record, but i have managed to break or bend every piece of the RW kit (meaning upper and lower mounts + cones)
and i havent just bent it once. i bent the upper mounts and sent them back, matt admited that he was behind in production and skimped on quality, then i bent the next set...
after they bent they let the rear shock rattle on the trail and this cause the tab that the RW lower mount bolts to BREAK OFF, yes.. the stock lower mount broke off. Finally the damn cones bent.
i tell you unless you are getting a super deal i'd go with the Rovertym. it is practically the same kit except 3 x thicker (no joke).
the last thing i found out about the kit was all that flex got me into way more trouble than it ever helped me. i never got used to the huge BANG of the spring reseating and it scared the hell out of my spotters and makes you look like you're driving a POS.
maybe try just getting the www.expeditionexchange.com spring retainers:
http://www.expeditionexchange.com/retainers/
extending your shocks like shown here:
http://www.expeditionexchange.com/dropnew.htm
then get a set of rovertym rear links and you are good to go.
http://www.rovertym.com/rearlinks.htm
hmm, and then when you still cant make it over the obstical it's time to buy the detroit and HD axels
enjoy
rob
p.s. , thats my shit up in kyle's window

I bought Pokerob's RW junk and it is crap, then again i am a cheapskate and a budding welder so no biggy for me to beef up.
If anyone wants the cones you can have them cheap as I am using retainers.

Ok,
Thanks Marty. I've actually been trying to do that recently but slipped this time.

I have used my Rockware kit for a couple of years now and haven't had any problems. The bang of the spring reseating isn't that big of a deal. You get real good flex and it isn't that expensive. My brother also runs it on his D-90 and he hasn't had any problems either. I know a lot of people that are very happy with it.

it will probably be ok for the mall crawler, but i tell you you are going backward in strength. the stock stuff is much stronger than the RW.
i am refusing to go backwards in strength...
try the links i gave you first

thanks for all of your input....I want to get different shock mounts for a Defender but I do not know who to turn to I guess I will stay stock.......but I will get a rovertym supension
By Ron on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 05:10 pm: Edit |
Get Rovertym shock mounts
Ron
By Kyle on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 05:19 pm: Edit |
All the lower mounts that bolt on to the existing Factory mount compromise strength and become a hanging point. Its really a silly thing to put on... I have to agree with Ron on the uppers. I like the stock ones myself but Johns are the strongest aftermarket upper mounts...

ok thanks for the input I will look more at the Rovertym units i think thats what I am gonna go with...would they increase wheel travel and provied any more lift?? I dont think I will be doing all of tellico or conqering Moab but I just wnat to know if I wanted to go out there I could hang with the big boys..THis will probaly be for a defender 90 although the more I look at D-WEB i like the disco's alot more..thanks alot for all of your input it has all been very helpful..I have added to my library of rover knowlege which of course will never be enough..thanks alot

I have already decided on ROVERTYM's 3" lift I just wanna get as much out of it as I can without compromising safety/reliability

Well , keep in mind the hieght is not your friend in any of the areas you mention. Manuverability is....

Phillip,
Here is the deal.
Basically the D90 guys tend to lean toward RW and SG. why? Not really sure. Part of it is that the highly modded disco is a newer phenomon than the highly modded d90 and RW and SG were here first so thats what they started out with and they have brand loyalty. Also D90s are light so they tend not to break stuff as easily as the heavier discos/RRs. Finally you see a higher percentage of D90s in rock crawling/west coast kinda stuff where as discos tend to be set up for more expedition/east coast stuff. Of course these are generalizations.
John @ Rovertym has got some really neat stuff for D90s though. The SP1 and SP2 springs are pretty much what I would design if I could for a highly modded D90 and also what the people who have been playing with them have determined works best. Also the RR5 (250# springs) are excelent along with a 189 or 220 rate front would be great for a multipurpose D90 (I have them on my RR and love them but for a Disco without the SLU the 250 rears might be light) and are the choice rates of hard core expedition/challenge type wheeling.
Anyway,
A fully kitted Rovertym set up will at least perform as well as the SG or RW set up and be way more reliable and much more streetable. Plus RTE is pretty much the only place you can get tall springs for a rover without selling your soul.
Cheers
Ron

thats why I am going with ROvertym Ron...I would not considered 3-4 inchs of lift higly modified....
By Ron on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 06:44 pm: Edit |
3-4in of lift will fit 35s comfortably on a D90. 37s with some trimming at 4in. with lockers and protection and a winch I would call that highly modified.
At 4in you are looking at two new driveshafts at 3in probably as well or a steady diet of U joints.
What tires are you going to run? 35-37s are murder on cv joints and axles especially locked.

By Phillip on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 07:03 pm: Edit |
I will prolly run 33" mud terrains.I think when i get enough money there will be arbs somewhere but I do not think that will happen cause I wouldnt justify the cost..I would put in new drive shafts and ungrade my axles....more than likely there will be a warn 9K on it.I understand all the lockers and trimming and u joint shit....I was just trying to sort out my lift and all...I want something that will stand out and flex good.I think I will also apply the same to a Disco at some point

Cool,
Sounds like you have a plan.
With cones the RTE stuff flexes like mad. Retained a little less I am guessing (although the SP springs are designed for it so who knows how they will flex) but I think retained works better but what do I know
So next question is retained or cones.
Ron
Get a disco or we will have to stop talking to you hehehe
By Phil on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 07:15 pm: Edit |
I will have a Disco one day but I have had my heart set on a D90 since I first saw them in 7th or 8th grade...sorry.......I would prolly go with cones..or try both if I didnt like something I think I could go back to what works best.I know a guy thats getting cones on his d 90 I will see what he says...sorry about the D 90.i wont mention it too much anymore sorry about that...
Disoweb is one of my most fav places of all time...what if there was a chat???????????

Well linux is a powerful and free OS. Perl is a scripted (means you can read it) language that is useful for doing things on a unix/linux system. There is more to it, just download Mandrake 8.1 or Redhat 7.1 and experiment away
