My engine at idle reves up and down about 100 rpm. And if you rev it up to about 3600 rpm when is drops back to idle it nearly stalls. Is there anything wrong with my engine or is it just in need of a service?

What is the year/mileage?
What has been done in the way of maintenence recently?
These are a few things that might help figure it out.
The first thing that comes to mind is the Throttle position sensor, but I'm no expert.
I'm sure the other information might help narrow it down.

Changed my stepper yesterday in a flash. My 95 no longer stalled and wife said she feels more power.
I was having erratic idle and stalling at lights/heavy traffic.

BTW, I can't believe what the dealers charge for the part and the servicing of steppers.

Forgot to mention..there are some good posts here about finding cheap steppers. I looked at them and changed mine for 39.99. FOund a Borg Warner at pep Boys. All you need is an adjustable wrench to change it.

Or, if you're like me and a sucker for specialized tools (those you only use for one job): Get a 5.5 mm nut driver.

My '96 D1 was doing it and I fixed it by cleaning the butterfly in the air intake. Just sprayed a bit of WD40 on a rag and wiped off all the black sh*t on the butterfly/intake. Now is running smoothly again.

IF you have a 96+ disco (4.0L) then don't buy the low cost BOrg Warner Stepper motor. It will not fit. I know, I tried.......
