My first oil change soon.

1. For the winter - 5W30?

2. And any preference for Castrol / Mobil / Penzoil / etc?

3. And how's about syth / natural?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

Ps If you know a good deal on filters (D2) let me know

5W30 is fine.

2 & 3 isn't as critical IF you change your oil often enough.

I use natural, syth is expensive... just make sure you change it often enough.

I use Havoline. Pick what you like....

Go to Advance Auto or wherever. Doesn't have to be a genuine filter... but if you insist on it, try Nathan Crabtree (boatbuggy@aol.com, I think).

I use Purolator from Advance myself.

Hey Dean,

I have a 2000 D2 and I have used 5w30 Castrol Synthetic Blend since I purchased the vehicle. I live in California and it appears to work good in both the winter and summer. I usually leave the oil in for about 5,000 miles and it still looks great at each oil change. As far as filters go, my local dealer offers 20% off on Fridays for do-it-yourselfers, so I usually just buy them there for around $9.

Thanks jpritter and leslie.

Leslie - where can I pick up a purolator?

I go to Advance Auto; have seen them at Sears.

http://www.pureoil.com/

Check out the list on the "Where To Buy" page for something that is close to you.

They make an oil filter just for Land Rover engines, L25195. Purolator told me not to use their more expensive PureOne filter, that the regular one is made to match the factory filter.

I compared this filter to the genuine filter and also to the Fram PH8 and PH16 sizes...
(Fram's book says to use the 16 size, while most would rather use the 8 since it is longer, having more capacity. Looking up the filter under other brands and then crossing over, though, ends up with some odd matches). The Purolator L25195 is the same length as the genuine filter... longer than a Fram 16 but shorter than an 8.

Also, I compared the Purolator air filter for my Disco with the genuine air filter.... again, extremely similar, moreso than with other brands.

Of course, Land Rover doesn't make their own filters, a filter manufacturer does, and then labels them for Rover. I don't 'know', but I have a hunch that Purolator may be the OEM maker of Rover's filters.

Did they say why? I have Pureone I my truck now.

I'll have to look for the email (hopefully still have it).

The jist of it was that different capacity + different construction could lead to different oil pressure problems.

When I changed my oil and tried the PureOne (equivelent size to the PH8) I ended up having some funky oil-pressure problems... oil-light blinking, clacky rattle like a Subaru, but had plenty of oil... changed to the recommended size, problem dissapeared.

And, it's a $1 cheaper. Downside, it's a PDQ item: have to call them, then pick it up the next morning, probably won't have one that size sitting on the shelf.

The PureOne DOES have the valve....

It WAS wierd, what happened.... loss of power on an uphill climb (highway), blinking light, but not low on oil, clacking like it was, tho'....

Concerned me enough such that I'll use the recommended one...

Just did mine last weekend and my neighbor is Jag / LR mechanic. He recommended 20 - 50 to me due to some cam noise that is a feature of Discovery 1. He said there is a bit of front to back slop in the mfg. tolerance that does introduce a minor amount of noise in the head (although mine does not exhibit this). Six quarts of Synth blend at $1.80 and a K&N filter at $10.95 later with no problem since.

Naturally, I found most of the motor glistening below the head - had some residue (oil) but no drips underneath. Hopefully no work needed at the bellhousing!

Cheers,

Erik

i use filters from NAPA, they are made by Wix. read somewhere a few years back that the Wix had better filtration and flow than others.

also use Mobil 1 fluids everywhere i can.

The following i saw on a Triumph Spitfire site.
seems like the Puralator is a pretty good filter.

Danno

Mobil 1: Single pass efficiency (SAE J806) of 98% vs. an 85% average for conventional filters. * Multiple pass efficiency (SAE J806) of 95% vs. an 80% average for conventional filters.

Pure One: Single Pass Test efficiency for the PureONE filter is 99.7%. Pure One captures 96% of all contaminants as measured by the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) #J806 Multiple Pass Test. *

An article that I read in Grassroots Motorsports several years ago stated that the Wix filter had ~495 sq. in. of filter media, the regular Purolator had ~ 450 sq. in. and the Fram had ~200 sq. in. Needless to say, I haven't used a Fram on anything since. They're cheap, but you get what you pay for. I used Wix and Purolator for a long time but now use Pure One filters on all my vehicles.

some comparison between different brands of oil' chemical contents.

i didn't compile it, hacked from somewhere.
I use Castrol or Valvoline, if i have a choice.

VI Flash Pour %ash %zinc %Phosphor

What's VI? And I take it ash, zinc and P should all be as low as possible right?
