are you calling gems the zarges boxes? huh...
we have a bunch in the lab. i'd prefer a few $5 plastic crates from home depot.
pelican cases inside the vehicle are a waste of space.

waste of space? Aren't you often running that Jeep-Tank?
Peter I am cheap too and embarssingly admit I have many $5 crates, but this is not a safe way to carry gear in a Disco even if they are tied down. I am still trying to work out my cargo storge problems but I think the solutions will include a number of pelican cases--or something else that is strong, waterproof, and opens only on command.

pelican cases are cool, but if you consider how much space is wasted by the ribs, handles, wheels, and whatnot, even Zarges boxes become a better alternative. My main complaint about Zarges boxes is that they are deep. There are other types of equipment cases, including some ammo cases, that are flat (so that you don't have to dig out a crapload of dirty stuff with sharp corners to find, say, a DMM), sturdy, and made of 1/8" stamped aluminum. I have one in my garage, will take a photo some time later.
jeep tank - hehehe.... no, when i take mine out, shit's boxed and tied down.

yeah . . jeep tank, and I have ridden in an M1!
Peter, within my first week in the US, I rode in an old Cadillac and then in a Jeep much like yours. It was hard to leave the US after those experiences

Jeep-Tank ... heh heh heh,
At first I didn't know what it was until it stopped moving (stuck #1) ... Then every now & then, I'd think "he's gone, where'd he go?, hope he's alright," then ... boom!, pound!, & roar!, and he'd be cresting over a hill and comin' up fast beside me ... kinda scared me, (especially when he looked straight sideways at me while he was eating an apple with one hand on the wheel and going about 30 - 40 hehehehe)
Kim
hunched up like little old lady with both hands way up on wheel, hehehe

Kim, he scares me, too, and that's been like that since he was 3 years old

My opinion is opposite of Peters. I really like how all my stuff is all organized now in all my pelican cases inside my truck. I get a lot more in them than my old home depot crates and it all wont be falling out as i bounce down the trail.
Plus, i can pull any one (or more) out and toss them on the roof rack if i need more room in

I've been really pleased with the Peli cases I got form EE. I used to use milk crates for some gear and stow the rest loose, but it's much nicer to have everything containerized for easy movement and DUSTPROOF for the desert. I load two 1650 cases side-by-side with enough floorspace left for the cooler, 7-10gal water, and 40mm ammo can.
By p m on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 04:46 pm: Edit |
Kristian, you put the 1650s flat or on their side?
I don't think 2 1650s will even fit flat in the disco.
i like pelican cases, and that's the only shit we use to ship expensive equipment. Now, imagine - you need some clean underwear after going sideways on Lion's back, and you need to pull a 1650 full of stuff out, and unhook all 7 latches.
what i like about the $5 crates, you don't have to pull all the shit from your truck to get something out of one.
but for the roof rack - pelican is the choice.

Peter , apparently you havnt gone down a steep enough slope that some of your gear that was in the back ends up on your dash. It can be a pain in the ass...

Kyle,
see above, my shit's tied down sometimes.
but, all together, if you ask me what would i prefer flying into my dash, it would be a cheap plastic crate rather than unbreakable pelican
speaking of slopes - how does this one look?

talk about the tick action, then

Yeah Peter, I say keep your underwear in 1650 on the rack. This gives you plenty or room for as many sets as are required, plus you dont want that shit flying around inside the Disco
By p m on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 08:28 pm: Edit |
at some point you need more weight down below -

yeah, underwear doesn't weigh that much, esp. at the beginning of the trip

Peter- I have the two 1650's, flat and side-by-side. (Of course I don't believe in rear seats unless there's actually people to sit in them.)
Now, for "normal" offroad, I've been clamping only the center latch and leaving the other six loose. When it's dusty, I close everything to keep dust out of the sleeping bags and cooking gear.
They can be opened without pulling them out of the Disco. But, I usually take the whole "cooking" box out and place it on the ground as a table.
The only thing I'm currently not satisfied with is I'm not maximizing the interior height of the Disco. Lots of wasted load space.

Kristian,
that's why people use shelved racks in discos. i've seen two or three already. A good rack will hold your stuff in cheap plastic crates, and won't let them fly around.
Chris Walker had a custom-built box for the Disco cargo compartment, it was up for sale for quite a while.
