Hey,
I checked the archives first, but didn't see a specific answer to my question...
I have OME HD and Extra HD on my Disco 1 with OME standard length shocks. I want a bit more lift (my springs are sagging) and thought about the RTE 2" springs until I heard from a lister on the RRO that said he'd been running the RTE 3" on his Disco 1 with no driveline vibrations. I think he stayed with standard length shocks, too.
Questions:
1) Anyone else report no driveline vibes with the RTE 3" setup and stock front radius arms, etc.?
2) Are extended brake lines essential?
3) Are stock length shocks going to work with RTE 3"?
Thanks
Red

1)no vibes here...plus i have a roto-flex
2)i don't think they are if using stock
shocks.
3)they'll work, but you'll lose downward travel.

I'm running 3" RTE's on my DSII, so my info may not apply. No corrected arms yet, but no vibration, either. I would think you'd need longer shocks to prevent yours from being over-extended during full drop. Also, your shocks will limit your drop amount, causing your shock mounts to bear the full force of this.

the driveline vibe is still a mistery... some do some don't. so the best way is to just do it and find out later.
if you are keeping the stock length shocks, no need for longer brakelines.
anything will work... how well? thats' a different question.
JUST DO IT!

I know John at RT can help you out with extended brake lines as well ... make sure you verify if you need one or two (apparently can vary per truck/year).

Hey all,
I spoke to John moments ago and I decided to go with the 2" HD springs to avoid potential driveline problems requiring a whole new set of running gear, etc. etc... I figure if I'm not happy with the ride height that I get with the 2" I can always add the RTE spring spacers and deal with driveline vibes with rear links and all that then.
Should be an increase from what I have today without being too much for my stock brake lines and running gear. He's sending them out this week.

Good move for you, its smart for you to expect the worst with 3" lift with vibs and front end wander,as the odds are against you but at least you are prepared for it.But then again its a Rover and it may like it,then its a bonus.

Danno, Any Pics of the Truck after 3 inch springs? Also do you have Rovertyme links or is everything else stock suspension? One more thing....WHat shocks do people usually run with the three inch springs? And i really cant beleive that you have no VIBES!!!!!

Lol,Thats that bonus you may get..

Yesss, they are finally going on. The woman I and get an excuse to leave the state.

PS. A couple guys and I tried to install this kit this past weekend, and lets just say when compressing a spring, and the compressor breaks, its crazy

Red,
Just sent you some pictures of a D1 with 2" RTE HD springs and stock tires. I think you will be happy with the results. Hope this helps.

I have RTE 3" springs with EE spring retainers, stock front radius arms, RTE rear links, both stock drive shafts, and no vibes. I think I just got lucky. I drove it with the stock shocks on for a few days with the springs on, it drove pretty badly. If I went over any kind of bump the shocks would max out. I have also been quite pleased with the Paragon Performance extended brake lines, although I ordered the 25" lines so I had to put some hose over both back brake lines and the left front one as well where they were rubbing against various components.

Seann:
How did you guys break the spring compressor? Was it too small, too cheap or what? I got my springs yesterday, and need to go rent a compressor and would really like to avoid 25lbs. of steel boinging around the garage.
By Bluegill (Bluegill) on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 01:12 pm: Edit |
AFV,
A couple people and some good cinch straps can work. Stand spring on floor, one guy compress spring from top and other guy cinches down straps (piece of wood on top of spring helps). Or, rent a compressor that has two screw shafts with clamps that go on either side of the spring. Tighten both sides EVENLY to compress and loosen evenly once installed - it's easy to get the spring to bend to one side if you're not tightening/loosening evenly. That's how springs can bend, and how shit pops off and breaks skulls.
By Danno on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 01:25 pm: Edit |
standing on the spring takes all the fun out of it Blue...
and when you are successful, it'll look like this:
By John on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 01:30 pm: Edit |
We use a long metal bar, slide thru spring into and under the frame, push down and push in. We have done up to 22" long springs that way, using a small floor jack in between frame and radius arm on longer springs to push axle down.
By Bluegill (Bluegill) on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 01:33 pm: Edit |
yeah, rears can easily "slide in". But if you're a real man, you simply grab each end and compress with he-man strength. I used the compressor
By John on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 01:41 pm: Edit |
Rears, just pull up on a hill, rock or ramp, frees the rear spring. Lol, I am too old for the he-man stuff now.
By Bruce on Thursday, October 25, 2001 - 05:52 pm: Edit |
Mike and Rico helped me install my 2" RTEs. No need to compress, simply use 2 bottle jacks. One side lifts the axle from underneath, the other side forces axle downward from frame. One note of cuation, watch those brake lines for over extension.
