Anyone have any info on these. Our local wholesaler had 4 255-55-18's by accident. He had little info on them...even contacted the N.A. office and they had no specs either. They had the "france" stamp which he says means they were made overseas. Whats with the secrecy? I thought I might challenge my fellow "Discowebites" to accept the mission.

Keith--sent an email to Michelin yesterday and got a call from a representative this morning (pretty good customer support; I thought I'd get an email back considering I'm not in the tire industry). The Syncrones are replacing the XPC. The Rep told me that the tire is H rated and biased toward an 80/20 on-road to off-road split. Apparently, the blocks are larger and spaced wider compared to the XPC while offering a larger contact patch. Also, the load rating is the same as the XPC. As for looks (it seems that you have seen them already, so you can verify this), they will have a different shoulder and similar middle tread. Finally, the tread wear rating is 380, traction is AA, and there are two steel reinforced plys covering a nylon ply. While I am not a tire afficinado, I have to believe that this combines to "offer higher corner stiffness, improve vertical stability, and improve dry handling" as claimed by the rep. This could very well be my next tire!

Hope this helps...DougC (in no way related to the tire industry)

Good work DougC....sounds like you are well on your way to being in the tire industry. Living in Park City we get quite a bit snow in the winter and our Wrangler HP's dont appear to be up to the task. I only want one set of tires for our DII w/ ACE so am looking for something both highway performing and snow capable. The Syncrone seems to be a logical choice. I only got a glance at the tread pattern so if you come accross any pic's let me know. (keith.fidone@hsc.utah.edu)
Thanks again.

Keith,
I work for Michelin North America. I believe the XPC's over here in the US are being replaced by the new Cross Terrain SUV tire. The only place I have seen the Synchrone is on the Michelin UK website.
I have seen the new Cross Terrain SUV tire and it looks to be winner. Understand though that it is primarily a highway tire. For specs and pictures, check out the Michelin websites at http://www.michelin.com/ for the US site, and http://car.michelin.co.uk/ for the UK site. There you will find comparisons of the different Michelin tires.

Keith--got a package from Michelin yesterday that states what I had posted last week. The picture shows a tread that is similar to the Cross Terrain SUV.

Joe--got the above from a Michelin rep who also sent copies of what she read over the phone; definitely the replacement tire for the XPC 4x4. In fact the Synchrone is "titled" on the sidewall as the 4x4 Synchrone. My guess the notation is done to make the tire appear more off-road ready even though the description says that the "tire can handle the occassional off-road trail." Yep--"Rugged styling that compliments your SUV"--right from the source (Michelin/MDL41255). Hey, does Michelin still make a mud tire? I really love the tires but want something a tad more aggressive

I want to know where the 4X4 O/R is from the http://car.michelin.co.uk/ website. That looks like a great tire. I wonder where it is here in the States?

Doug--thanks for the info. What phone # did you call @ Michelin..I might call them to get the package. Interesting still that you cannot find the "syncrone" on the Michelin web site yet. The above post saying the Cross Terrain is the replacement was puzzling along with the lack of info on the "Syncrone".....keep me posted

Keith--Not sure what number you can call; I e-mailed Michelin and they called me the next morning. If you e-mail your address, I will send what I have. My e-mail is dcampbell at idworld.net (change "at" to @ and lose the spaces). I don't think the site has been updated yet because they still show the XPC as available.

Brett-I'm with you on the OR. Looks much more capable than the Synchrone.

General question--has anyone tried Goodyear's A/TD? The tires are avaiable at my local Sam's Club and Look decent. Unfortunately, the Goodyear site has no information. Any help is appreciated.

I checked out the UK website and found the Syncone's listed. No picture of course but avail on the 255-55-18's extra load. I sent them an e-mail...will let you know if and how they respond. Should have this "Syncrone" thing rapped up by the time the Discovery III starts to ship.

Hi Guys,
Yes, The XPC is out, and the Synchrone is the replacement. I asked around, and the folks in Customer Service said that evidently Land Rover has not yet approved the Synchrone for OEM fitment. Seems they don't like the tread pattern, go figure. Anyway, outside of the LTX series, Michelin US doesn't offer a more trail oriented tire. I guess they are steering toward having BFG be their 'off-road' tire line. ( BFG and Uniroyal are part of Michelin ).

Joe--Thanks for the confirmation. Seems like either Goodyear or BFG for my next set. Of course, Dunlop RT might not be bad either...DougC
