This was in a local paper. Some of you may be interested.

MIDLAND carmaker Land Rover is recalling all 72,000 Freelander models made since the vehicle was launched in 1997 up to March this year after a safety scare.
The best-selling off-roader has been hit by three unrelated, potentially dangerous faults, which need expert attention.

One of them relates to the handbrake not engaging properly and the company has warned that it could even be released altogether if the car gets a severe jolt – or even if a door is slammed particularly hard.

Because of the potential seriousness of this, Land Rover has ordered the replacing of the whole of the handbrake assembly on 68,838 models. Dealers at home and abroad have been warned to expect heavy workloads in a project that will leave the Solihull carmaker with a milt-million pound bill.

Because of the scale of the recall Land Rover has taken on extra technicians to help out at the over-worked dealerships as well as staff to man the telephones for owners booking in cars.

A second fault affects 4,391 three-door models and involves the seat-back mechanism failing to lock back into place when the seat is returned to its rest position. Land Rover says that if this happens the backrest could move when the vehicle brakes. It is proposing to replace the whole of the seat frame assembly on affected Freelanders.

The third fault affects more than 12,000 models built towards the end of 2000. The company says extra protection needs to be added to the engine harness underneath the fuse box because some wear and tear has been spotted.
In severe cases this could lead to the failure of a number of electrical functions like headlamps.

The company is now set to write to owners urging them to book their vehicles in for the work, which it terms “routine safety checks”. The work will be carried out free of charge and alternative vehicles are being offered for customers where necessary.

A company spokesman stressed however that there had been no serious incidents relating to any of the faults.
